The 2005 Co-Sox?
« on: October 02, 2005, 11:07:45 am »
Since the 2001 Co-ards have set the precedent that there is no such thing as a wild card winner (just a wild card slot) when you tie for the division championship, today the BoSox can put a dagger in the heart of a Yankee fan with a win.

Why?

Because they can legitimately claim a co-championship of the division and nobody can say a damn thing to them.  I wonder if the same woman in the league office (in New York) who came out in defense of Tony LaRussa and Walt Jocketty in 2001 is still there?  Hmmmmm... wonder if she's a closet Yankee fan too.  Swallow hard missy, it may be a tough day to take back those rash statements from 2001 declaring that there is such a thing as a co-championship in baseball today.

That is *if* the Sox win and I doubt anyone has told Joe Torre this because he plans to use his reserves today and rest his regulars.

The 2001 Co-ards were a joke and the Yankees put on the t-shirts in Fenway yesterday.  The Bosox won't do it.

In 2001, the Astros put on the t-shirts at Busch. The whole co-ard thing wasn't noticed until the beginning of the '02 season, in an early road trip to St. Louis.

Relatedly, I love all the "baseball has lost more of its innocence because of the tiebreaker rule" as though it's never happened before.

I do hope the Red Sox win today and hoist a "co-champions" banner. As if Red Sox fans weren't pathetic enough already, that would be the cherry on top.

It's funny - all the people who came up to me last year and said they were Red Sox fans.  I haven't had anyone come up to me about their season coming down to the final weekend against the Yankees.  Maybe those people will notice next week if the Sox aren't in the postseason.

Boston Globe
"New York's record against the Sox gives them a higher playoff seed, but the Sox are contesting the Bronx Bombers' contention that they've now won eight straight AL East titles.  ''We are co-champions," said Sox vice president Charles Steinberg. ''The rule is in place only for playoff seeding."

Consistent with that remark, Sox scoreboard operators flipped the Yankees and Red Sox in the standing on the Green Monster scoreboard less than 10 minutes after the completion of the finale. While ''Tessie" blared over the Fenway sound system, the ''Boston" placard was placed atop the ''New York" sign. However, the Red Sox' celebration garb made no reference to the word ''champion." The hats read ''Division Series" while the T-shirts broadcast ''Wild Card."

''I'm not going to get into that debate," said Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino. ''What this means is that we are postseason participants. October baseball was our goal and I think we should focus on that imagery."

Theo Epstein said, ''The rule says we're wild-card champs, so we're wild-card champs."

The New York Daily News is ass backwards, surprised?

"...the Red Sox will list themselves as co-champions of the East in their media guide next year.
At game's end, the Green Monster scoreboard minions had dutifully moved "Boston" on top of "New York" in the final AL East standings.
That's what the Houston Astros did in 2001 when they were the wild card to the National League Central champion St. Louis Cardinals, a gesture that to this day still rankles Cards manager Tony La Russa."

Maybe we could find out the contact info for the Daily News' ombudsman and flood them with emails and calls. You know ... a publicity stunt. With the desired result being that the Co-Ards are exposed once again for being whiny-ass bitches.

(emailed to Madden and the news desk)

Dear Mr. Madden,

I realize that the only time New Yorkers think of the Houston Astros is when you're making up rumors about a trade for Roger Clemens. Or when we no-hit the Yankees. Or when the Mets sign away our free agent outfielder and catapult into the playoffs.

And I also understand why New Yorkers would be upset about the Red Sox naming themselves co-champions of the division. Because the exact same thing happened to the Astros in 2001, but not as you described it.

You wrote today: "At game's end, the Green Monster scoreboard minions had dutifully moved "Boston" on top of "New York" in the final AL East standings. That's what the Houston Astros did in 2001 when they were the wild card to the National League Central champion St. Louis Cardinals, a gesture that to this day still rankles Cards manager Tony La Russa."

Now, as an Astros fan, I already know this is total BS. The ASTROS won the NL Central in 2001. But just to be sure, here's a story from MLB.com that explains it:

The Link

Here's a quote: "The two teams finished the season at 93-69, but the Astros won the season series 9-7 and therefore are the division champions while the Cardinals are the Wild Card team."

The ASTROS were the 2001 NL Central champs, and the Co-ardinals named themselves Co-champs. (And the Co-Ardinals' move was supported and encouraged by the MLB marketing geniuses, I might add.) Imagine the Astros' surprise when they got to Busch the next year and saw the "Co-Champions" banner. A sight Yankee fans will now get to enjoy in perpetuity at Fenway.

Still, maybe I'm missing something here. I mean, I'm just some hayseed Astros fan who knows how to use the internet. So I used my extensive Google skills (searched for "2001 NL Central co-champions") and verified in 1.71 seconds that yes, in fact, the Co-Ardinals were actually the 2001 NL Wildcard.

So I'd love to hear how that fact "to this day still rankles Cards manager Tony La Russa."

Maybe you could call and ask him about it. You must have misunderstood him the first time.
