Is baseball this unpopular?
« on: October 07, 2005, 10:32:12 am »
Is anybody else bothered by the fact that the baseball playoffs, the premier event of the year for MLB, is on ESPN2 in the afternoons, while the "flagship" ESPN is showing some second-rate golf tournament?  I mean, I'm biased because I only get ESPN in high-def (I don't think anybody gets ESPN2HD other than three guys in Bristol), but I just can't believe that there aren't enough people clamoring to see the game that they can't get this on either the main ESPN or on the networks.

And while I'm ranting, if that fucking talking baseball on Fox shows up again to tell me what a brushback pitch is, I swear, I'm going to go on a three-state shooting spree.  Can they talk down to their main audience any more than they already do?  They don't do this crap on their football broadcasts - why do they think that baseball fans are idiots?

probably cause they do so many games in atlanta.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I wish they're replace Steve Lyons and Thom Fuckface with the talking baseball...

At least the talking baseball has a shot at pronouncing Willy's last name right...
Jesus guys... Its the fucking playoffs... A LITTLE research wouldn't kill you.
I'm sure that Lyons could've taken 5 minutes off grooming his greasy-ass mullet to maybe check out the Astros Media guide.

Amen & Amen!!  I almost turned the sound off altogether.  At least Lyons didn;t get much camera time after the horrible pre-game show.

And while I'm already all riled up... FUCK Fox and every single one of their goddamn broadcasters.
HEY SHITHEADS... DID YOU KNOW THE ASTROS BEAT THE BRAVES LAST YEAR?!

Yeah, thats right, stop deep throating Chipper Jones for 30 seconds and maybe give the Astros a LITTLE credit.
Seriously, your man crush on the fattest centerfielder in baseball is great, but SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY.
And hey Thom, I realize that you're not much of a talent as is, but JESUS christ, don't you think you could maybe, JUST maybe, have something intersting to say that isn't completely scripted and wasn't already covered in the game one broadcast?

And to the crew that did game one, FUCK YOU! The Astros are winning 4-1 and the game is right where the Braves want it.
Fuckface Jones hits a 2 run homer, they're still losing, but thats not important. We need another 10 minute description of why the Braves are 10x better than the Astros.
I'm GLAD I had to leave and not hear the last 3 innings of play by play. You guys are FUCKING TERRIBLE.
Hey Eric Karros, your man-crush on all things Brave is adorable, but seriously, you've got some man-mayo on your chin from that that 9 inning blowjob.

And I'm spent...

and while we're at it, and this is viewing minutia, BUT, Fox had the batting helmets of all the play-off teams and they were all current......save one.  You guessed it.   Still using the late 90's blue and gold slanted star.

I can't listen to thier broadcast during the play-offs.
The strike zone was BS last night and nary a mention.  I'll deal with the delay and enjoy Milo and Ash.  I will say that FSSW is doing a good job with thier post game show.

"Fattest"? Or, "phattest"?

I think we all know where Stuart Scott stands on this debate...

Fattest.

He looks like fucking Buddah.

Seeing him standing next to Adam Everett looked like a Jenny Craig commerical.

Very easy solution. For any Fox broadcast, mute the sound. If you must have noise, pop in one of your favorite CD's. As soon as I saw Lyon's Grecian 5 hair helmet, I fired up Double Nickels on the Dime (The Minutemen). Although, considering the result, I don't think I'll be hearing from D. Boon again until the playoffs end.

Not that it matters...but they had a Texas Rangers helmet that was outdated too. Of course, the whole FOX sports operation is run by people who don't lke baseball.  Their thinking goes as follows:
1)"Baseball is uninteresting, we need to spice things up with a gimmick."
2)Ratings drop as people are turned off by ignorant announcers, interviews that break up in-game action, and animated baseballs that break up in-game action.
3)"We're losing viewers!  Quick, let's come up with another gimmick!"
4)Add another gimmick.
5)Go back to step 2.

And as long as we're griping ... when have we ever seen a broadcast prior to this one where the announcers didn't even bother to tell us who was at bat?  I turned away briefly, and when Burke hit his double, I found myself thinking ... that doesn;t *look" like Backe ... ???  The I recognized Burke, and then I tried to pay *very* close attention.  They never made a subsequent identification, and covered up most of the screen with a bunch of computer-generated nonsense for most of Biggio's at bat.

I was better off when I was blocking out the memories.  grrrr.

Were we better off with day games?

I will say this; it was pretty keen of Brennaman (sp?) to mention Qualls when they were discussing ROY.  Noting that setup/middle relievers don't get the sexy stats, but that Chad had been a very effective part of the bullpen all year setting up for Lidge.

Don't forget the Smoltz interview section during the game, while they were playing, where they showed his face whiel the game action was being shown in a little bubble in the corner.

First, have commentary during the game while not talking about what is actually happening in the game and then shrink the actual game so that those interested can't actually figure it out for themselves.

Brilliant.

So does anyone know when the hell Fox's contract with MLB ends?  And if so will Buck, McCarver, Lyons, and all the other dumbshits follow wherever it goes?

I remember when CBS has MLB postseason coverage and Lidgin' McCarver was on that too.

The current FOX contract ends after the 2006 World Series.  No other over-the-air national contract is in place.  ESPN inked a deal earlier this year through 2013, but no word on who'll carry the non-cable games, if anyone.  Chances are, whomever it is whill hire the same morons we've been watching for years, though hopefully without the annoying gimmicks.

One "gimmick" FOX Baseball gave us that I like is the "Fox Box", with the score, inning, baserunners and outs in the corner of the screen.  Something similar is seen on just about every network now for all sports.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

But even then, it wasn't flashy enough so they made it spin around and shoot off fireworks and make everybody reach for their cel phones.

I'm watching the UVA-BC game right now, and Brent Musberger is complaining about how long an instant replay review is taking.  Then they start talking about how they are on pace for a 4 hour game, and he says, "Well, it doesn't really matter... the Yankee game got rained out, so there's no baseball on tonight..."
"Ground ball right side, they're not gonna be able to turn two OR ARE THEY, THROW, IS IN TIME!!! WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TURN BY BRUNTLETT AND EVERETT, AND THEY CUT DOWN MABRY TO END THE GAME, AND THE ASTROS LEAD THIS NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES THREE GAMES TO ONE!!!!!"
