LAA
« on: March 05, 2018, 07:53:32 am »
Saw them yesterday at Tempe. They will be a formidable opponent if they have enough pitching. Quite a lineup on paper with the biggest dilemma being what to do with Pujols if Ohtani is the DH. Upton, Trout, and Calhoun in the OF, Cozart, Simmons, Kinsler, and Cron in the infield, and Pujols/Ohtani as the DH. Some good LAA fans sitting behind us did not believe their pitching is anywhere near good enough. Upton hit a long home run, and Trout, Pulols, and Cozart also hit hard line drives to the deep reaches of the park. Ohtani will be much more valuable to them if he can be a solid pitcher.

PS Our pal Chris Carter played 1B and had a single and a double.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I agree but one small quibble: Cron was traded to TB.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Angels Looking for More 2-Way Players

The #Angels are doing something interesting in instructional league: They are going to teach two outfielders how to pitch. It's not to convert them, but to see if they can find more two-way players.

I'm probably missing the genius of this idea and it doesn't strike me as shrewd.  Probably because the Angels never seemed too innovative to me.

The downsides: (1)  you might stunt their development as position players; and (2) if they are valuable position players and develop on schedule, you run the risk of Ohtani-ing them and losing their value while they rehab from TJ.

The upsides: (1) It allows you more flexibility in roster construction

Most likely outcome:  Like most players, they won't develop into valuable MLB position players and the fact that they might be borderline serviceable pitchers is sort of irrelevant.
