Springer Dinger!!!

First pitch of the game, 1-0 Astros
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

There's what a leadoff walk and a poor pitch on a 1-2 count gets you.

Dang I thought Springer had that.  And Bregman botching the cutoff allowed the 2nd run to score.

B1:

Pederson...3-0...draws a four pitch walk
Machado...0-2...1-2...lines to LF...Kemp just stands there, never moves and it hits about 3 inches in front of his feet....may be didn't see that ball very well...Pederson to 2B
Grandal flies out F9
Bellinger flies out F8 on the first pitch
Dozier...takes one belt high right down the center of the plate for ball one...WTF?...now full count...hits a soft liner CF...Springer dives, it's in his glove but pops out as he hits the ground..now Bregman mishandles the relay and Machado scores  on the double and E6
Muncy strike out swinging

2-1 Dodgers

Astros haven’t won on a Sunday since beating the Pale Hose on July 8th. Since then they’ve lost to the Tigers, Angels and Rangers.

Kemp did not see it at all. TK said he had his arms outstretched. Blum talked about visibility issues last night.

Is Yuli merely resting? This lineup looks pretty punchless.

Yeah, Reddick and Springer battled the sun on fly balls too.  Tough sky today.

B2:

Taylor strike out swinging
Hernandez...0-2...doubles to LCF on a hanging breaking ball...lucky that one stayed in the yard
Buehler grounds out 4-3, Hernandez to 3B
Pederson...0-2...1-2...swings and misses a pitch in the dirt for ball two...pops behind the plate...Stassi never finds it as it bounces near the screen...and eventually grounds out 3-1 on a nice stab by White

2-1 Dodgers

T3:

Kemp...0-2...1-2...2-2...strikes out swinging at a pitch in his eyes
Cole...0-2...strikes out looking
Springer...0-2...1-2...2-2...3-2 as Springer sprints down to 1B, forgetting the count...now walks
With Reddick at the plate, Springer caught stealing 2-4 and Springer jams his hand into the bag...not good

I just feel like that hand is broken.  Please No!!!

Cole missed his spot on the pitch that should’ve been strike 3 to Machado. Stassi has to reach across the plate to catch it. I feel like those calls are missed more often than not.

Is Altuve doing rehab yet?  I saw that McCann was doing some rehabbing already but I don't recall anything about Altuve.  I am hopping a healthy and hitting Correa come back next week.

But, I think Tucker gets the call back.

Altuve went back to Houston with Lance.  So no rehab yet.

Correa homered last night for ther hooks and is slated to start tonight.

Luhnow focused on the waiver wire.

Valbuena DFA (meh)
"But he hit only .199 with a .253 OBP, .335 slugging percentage, nine homers and 33 RBIs in 96 games this season, striking out 100 times and walking 19 times in 288 plate appearances."

I agree Jim. If the Springer diagnosis is as bad as it looked, there will be a waiver deal. Wonder what outfielders have cleared waivers? Willing to bet McCutchen cleared. We will get a good look at him the next 2 days.

Fuck, White. Ball three and ball four.

Enlarging a photo on one of the apps, Springer’s thumb looked broken at the top knuckle

T4:

Reddick...who was at the plate when Springer was thrown out to end the inning...grounds out 4-3
Bregman 3-1...hit by pitch on the hand...trainer out..looks like he'll stay in though...yep
Marwin...0-2...1-2...singles to LF, Bregman to 2B
White strikes out swinging at a pitch over his head
Davis...works the count full...strikes out swinging at a pitch in his eyes...after the catcher had caught the ball.

3-1 Dodgers

Technically he stands in the outfield when he plays defense.

His bat would be welcome,  but there'd be shifting required defensively to compensate.

Probably so and he would be someone who would clear waivers because of that contract. Don’t think the Astros make that move because of his defensive liabilities, though if you could talk the Rangers into eating half that contract you may not have to give up much.

Can’t see the Astros doing that deal though.

That was three (?) years ago when he could still move, and it didn't involve making the Rangers better. I think the situation is pretty different now.

Choo is owed $21 million per year and is under contract for 2 more years after this one. Rangers would have to eat at least half of that for me to bite. There will be cheaper options out there. Someone like McCutchen, who is a free agent at years end, would be much more ideal.....if he clears waivers.

That was three (?) years ago when he could still move, and it didn't involve making the Rangers better. I think the situation is pretty different now.

The rangers aren't looking to seriously improve at the MLB level until the new stadium opens.  And there is no discernible sign that any pieces are in place for that to happen.

They could be looking to stockpile arms.

Fuck White. You swing at five straight balls then take a fucking fastball right down the middle.

Someone like McCutchen, who is a free agent at years end, would be much more ideal.....if he clears waivers.

I wouldn't be surprised if Oakland tried to block something like that, although I doubt that we'll ever hear about it (unless they actually pick him up, of course).

Agree. We need to add a piece, but it doesn’t have to be Choo, although I have always liked his approach at the plate.

McCutch would be a nice add. He is on the downslope of course, but he’s a very solid vet and could be reinvigorated by joining a contender. I always wanted his Pirates teams to be better than they were during his peak years. He seems like a guy who would love a shot at a title.

Yep.  A couple of solo shots is all they've mustered, and one of those guys is possibly out for the season.  And the other isn't really a power hitter.

The telecast said that they sent Perez down to Corpus (I think).  Was there some other move that I missed? I thought that Lance to the DL made room for Osuna, and Perez could stay.

I wouldn't be surprised if Oakland tried to block something like that, although I doubt that we'll ever hear about it (unless they actually pick him up, of course).
Very possible, but if I’m the A’s that would be a pretty big risk. Claiming a player just to block, while it happens, is a gamble. I would think the A’s like where they are at right now with their roster and wouldn’t want to have to make room if the Giants let them have him. McCutchen probably hit the wire on day one or two of eligibility and it would not have been known at the time that the Astros would potentially need him. Here are some players that MAY pass through waivers unclaimed and could be options if George is out. Of course all of these have some warts from their contract to performance or both.

AL
Choo
Adam Jones (unlikely to waive 5/10 rights)
Jose Abreu (doubt he’d clear)
Alex Gordon
Curtis Granderson
Kole Calhoun

NL
McCutchen
Jose Bautista

All I looked at were outfielders, except for Abreu. I guess you could look at other position players and shuffle your lineup some but I don’t like those options.

Time for another big 8th inning.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed

If you're not going to score, might as well move things along so you can get to the next inning and try again.

Since getting swept by the Astros in early June, the A’s are 32-10 (.762 winning %).

Agree.

Timetable for CC is realistically the first good news we may get.

The Springer injury will likely require a scan and that'll happen tmw.

Plus today was pretty well played.   Cole was not dominant but limited the damage and the Astros threatened but couldn't break through.

Bullpen was excellent,  including Harris.

Astros put some runners on but weak bottom part of the order, plus the loss of Springer, couldn’t punch a run across. If Springer bats four times and Gurriel and Gattis  were in there maybe it’s a different story.

Even if Springer fields it on a quick hop, maybe neither run scores. Great effort, tough luck.

Edit:  oops, forgot there were two out. One run scores but probably not the second.
