Spring Training
« on: February 14, 2018, 02:37:14 pm »
I just booked my tickets and will be at the March 14 and 15 Spring Training games against the Cardinals and Nationals.  Is anyone else going to be there at that time.  Love to meet you all.

I've never been to spring training in West Palm.  Are you limited to just seeing the games or can you watch the players practice on the back fields as well?  When is morning practice and when should you get there to watch.

I have not been to West Palm, but at Kissisimee, workouts were separate, and you had to be on a pass list to get in. Maybe they have relaxed this now.

I went to workouts without being on a pass list, but that was 10+ years ago already.

Maybe the workouts are open now. BG had a more recent experience than I. Jay Miller of the Express put me on the pass lists.

I think the only time the workout areas are open to the public is the first week, before the Spring Training games begin.

Could be. I was there after the games had started.

I've been at different times of spring training, and the workouts were always open.  I preferred those over the games.  I enjoyed the drills and whatnot.

But, I don't know how it is at the new place.  Tweet McTaggart, he should know.

My experience a few years ago was that once games start, the back fields weren't open on home games but were on away games.  With the new park and sharing the complex with the Nats, the rules I am sure have changed.
Always ready to go to a game.

That may be true about the home games.   I forgot about that.

I wonder how much of this is a real thing:  "One reason teams don’t repeat is that it is so difficult for a staff to pitch into November then come back the next season"
https://nypost.com/2018/02/16/the-killer-move-that-could-put-astros-in-rare-world-series-air/

Is the shortened recovery time in the offseason that impactful for pitching?  When I was running competitively, 8 weeks of no/low intensity workouts was the gold standard for full recovery after training all year/season for the championship season.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

I believe there is something to this. In my mind, it sure seems to have impacted the Mets and Cubs most recently. I’m hoping the Astros will be ok with Keuchel, McCullers and McHugh since they spent so much time on the DL. Verlander seems to be a freak of nature so hopefully he is impervious to this. I do believe that Peacock and Morton are the two that really need to be watched like a hawk. Morton has a lengthy injury history and Peacock certainly did something last year that is out of the norm for him. With the depth we have on the mound, I almost wouldn’t mind them starting those two up a couple weeks later than everyone else. I’m sure they have a plan though.

In Miami now visiting relatives.  Going to head up to W Palm for the Nationals ST opener.

Anyone know about the facility, where I can get a decent lid that doesn't cost $40 and advice about where to sit?  First timer for ST in a couple decades

I'll buy a beer if you got time.  We fly into Lauderdale that morning.

ETA: if you haven't bought one yet, you may want to go on line and get a ticket.

Very kind.   Just carving out time to break away from the pack today --- so I suspect time may be on my side.

Will check out the tickets then.  Thanks!

Anyone know if the West Palm Beach facility (opening day) has a small shop where I can buy an Astros cap and maybe a T-shirt?

Of course. Every field has a team shop,
