What's up with Ashby?
« on: August 17, 2016, 11:21:04 am »
Life has gotten in the way and I haven't been able to follow the GZ lately, but it seems like it's been over a week now with just Blum and Brown on the TV.

I'm sure there'd be a relevant thread here if he'd actually been fired, so I'm not getting my hopes up there, but what exactly is going on?

Probably just vacation...this network gives their on-air talent, s.ic., breaks during the season. Or maybe he is attending some sensitivity training.

Apparently he took some time off to start a beard.

I hope he's been job hunting and found a place to land next year.

He'll be back.

We will see, but if I had to put odds I'd say 90% chance he is gone.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

My guess is he's gone and knows it. He's taking every ounce of time off available to him allowed by his contract. Just a guess.

I keep hoping this is the case with any uniform that resembles a rainbow.  Yet they keep showing up.  There are those who just keep thinking with their inner 8 year old, no matter how bad something looks as a grown up, whether that's uniforms or former Astros catchers.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

This probably has nothing to do with the Ashby situation, but during a game earlier this year Bill Brown mentioned on air that he wanted Julia to spend some time doing PBP for a game or two.  He ended up walking those comments back a bit but said he'd still like to see her do it.  I don't know if it's happened since then (haven't been able to catch all the games).  At first I thought it was some contractual thing that didn't allow her to do it without being paid more.  Now I'm wondering if she's being groomed for the booth somehow once Ashby makes his exit.

I doubt that. She is really good at what she does though. Kevin Eschenfelder did some PBP earlier this year so contractual things probably don't preclude him or her.

If we can't get JD back, I wouldn't mind Mike Stanton or Eschenfelder, they were really good when Ash was sick earlier in the year.

I would miss him on the radio, too. But until Brownie retires or whatever, they'd just need a TV PBP guy for the road games anyway. So we could still get Ford on the radio half the time, perhaps.

The other thing is that Ford and Sparks have good chemistry and should be kept together. I learned more of what was going on from Sparks than I do from Ashby wondering about (fill in the blank).

I don't think anything can beat his assessment that winning the division MIGHT be better than winning the Wild Card.

Why do they need a separate radio and TV pbp guy.  I have watched TV with the radio broadcast on and its great.  Why is there a need to spend money to have both?  When Brownie retires I'd be really happy with Robert Ford taking over.

Because they are different mediums. Radio PBP needs to paint a picture and tv PBP are more casual and less descriptive. Plus, when I have had my tv muted with the radio on the two aren't in sync.

You could own the Marlins with that kind of penny pinching.

Well the sync issue could be easily fixed. When I listen to the radio and watch tv muted, I never feel like Ford is over describing the action.

Now that you mention it, Scully has been doing both radio and tv I believe for Dodger home games for a while. He works alone so he controls the pace but it works. Of course, that is Scully.

I think his contract is up after this year. Maybe the Astros can nab him.
