Fister is very quietly having a nice season. Opens the bottom of the first with Ks of Muggsy Odor and Desmond.
1-0 good guys after a lead-off HR by Springer off of Darvish.

After a slap single to Lf by Mazzara, a damn good young player, Fister Ks Smiley Beltre for 3 outs and 3ks in the first.

These KFC ads annoy the crap out of me. Darvish gets the good guys out 3up and down in the 2nd. Gomez called looking at strike 3. Darvish looks beatable to me tonight.

You know...sometimes I wonder if these guys give any thought at all to how the pitcher is going to pitch them. The taking of strike three meatballs by Correa and Gomez makes me think not.

Does Pettis lead the league in helping guys get thrown out? Was he carried away with the fact Castro had just stolen a base?

Terrible send. Desmond already had the ball by the time Castro reached 3B. It was a lollipop throw that still beat him by six steps.

The Ranges BABIP against Houston must be .375. They find every hole. I think part of this is not having hard throwers in the rotation.

Or because the Astros fucking insist on bunching fielders up on every fucking hitter, leaving 80% of the fucking infield fucking uncovered.

And only 1 down with the 3rd spot in the other coming up. Not like Correa's been great at driving in the runner on third with less than two, but it wasn't like a pitcher or Gomez was coming up next.

T4:

Rasmus flies out F7
Valbuena with a ground rule double down the RF line, as the ball sticks in the padding.  Hinch out to argue, but the call stands
Gattis hammers one to LF, leaping grab at the wall
Gomez....full count...walks
Marwin strikes out swinging at three curveballs in the dirt.

1-1

Well, Correa is completely overmatched by Darvish, so perhaps Pettit thought that was the only opportunity to plate hat run.  Still, Castro had no chance.

Fielder leans into one is hit by the pitch
Andrus...quickly 0-2...1-2...grounds into easy 6U-3 double play
Moreland doubles off the top of the LF wall
Hoying pops out F4

1-1 after four

B5:

Wilson strikes out looking
Odor...0-2...bitching about both calls, even though they were right down the middle...flies out F7
Desmond grounds weakly to 2B...but that fucking shift...single
Desmond steals 2B, as Correa is WAY late getting to the bag on a perfect throw...throw goes into CF and Desmond moves to 3B on what's scored a TE-2, I think...announcer won't say.
Mazara flies out F9

1-1 still

Carlos Gomez falls in to the same category for me that Odor does. What a fucking embarrassment of an at bat.  Dude took 2 meatballs after flailing wildly at the first strike. Jesus.

Odor is a productive baseball player though.

I could live without ever seeing Carlos Fucking Gomez again.

For the sake of my blood pressure I think I'll skip watching his at bats from here on out.

I would like to see Gomez hit off a tee though. Imagine how far the tee would travel with that swing.

B6:

Beltre...full count...singles to LF, nice play by Rasmus to hold it to one...throw behind Beltre at 1B almost gets him.
The Fat Kid pops out F6 on the first pitch
Andrus strikes out swinging
Beltre moves to 2B on a "wild pitch" that Castro had no intention of trying to block
Moreland...full count...walks
Hoying...full count...grounds out 4-3

1-1

I thought the same thing.  Gattis may not be the best back there, yet, but he sure as hell tries more.

I had been wondering who was doing PBP in this series and just tonight heard it was Kevin Eschenfelder.  I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but he surprisingly doesn't suck at it.

Harris in to try to close it out...

Moreland...3-1 as Harris is getting squeezed...3-2...flies out F8
Hoying taps a lazy chopper to 3B...but that fucking shift, no one is within 90 feet of it...single
Wilson flies out F8
Odor...representing the tying run...strikes out swinging...2-3 on the putout, as Odor runs halfway to the pitcher's mound to try to interfere with the throw

Realistically, they needed to gain ground in the standings this series, but not losing ground is a must.   Another loss pretty much puts a fork in them.

But... if it was a 'must win' and they lost it- tomorrow can't mean anything... Or perhaps yesterday wasn't the must win but today was?

As I said...realistically they needed to cut into that 7-game lead this series, if they wanted to get back into the division race.  They didn't.  They still have to try to not lose any more ground.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Realistically, I guess they're fucked as they didn't cut into the lead. Has anyone alerted Ground Control? They might need to update the algae rhythm.

I'm sure as resident hall monitor, you'll get right on that.  In the meantime, you can stop watching now.

Between Ash, GoGo, bystander Hinch, swinging out of their shoes in all situations, and the slapdickery in the field and on the bases... I've certainly considered that at length.
Oye. Vamos, vamos.

The idea of a must-win in early June is loco, I don't care what the algae rhythm says.

Yeah, well I'm a little loco too.

BTW, I'm looking out my window at Nana Plaza. Seems alive and well.

Are you at the JW Marriott? You must be. Quite a coincidence that you'd stay right there on Sukhumvit and Soi 4.

I am. This is where I usually stay. Unless there's a coup in progress, in which case this close to the park can be problematic.  It's only coincidence that I have a room looking in that direction.

Or because the Astros fucking insist on bunching fielders up on every fucking hitter, leaving 80% of the fucking infield fucking uncovered.

this times a million.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.
