Derek Fisher

A couple of articles today on him, including a report on his bat heating up in the AFL:

Quote
Fisher has hit safely in six straight games for the Desert Dogs, with a .400 average (8-for-20), one home run and six RBIs in that span.

Quote
Fisher's recent hot streak has his Fall League average up to .250, and, after driving in a pair of runs Tuesday, he now leads the Desert Dogs with 14 RBIs. Meanwhile, his 13 walks in 16 games have translated to a .391 on-base percentage.

And this write-up in Baseball America:

Quote
The scouting report on Fisher pegs him as a corner outfielder, likely limited to left field due to a below-average arm, but with the power and speed to put up 20-20 seasons in the big leagues. He recently showed off his plus-plus raw power with a couple of long home runs that had Fall League crowds buzzing, including a three-run shot off Arizona righthander Yoan Lopez that landed well up the distant, multi-tiered batter’s eye at Salt River Fields.

Thanks for the heads up.  That swing looks to have more loft than when he was in the CWS.  Seems like they thought highly of him; would be great to see him approach those expectations.

Remember those reports at the time of the Giles trade that Fisher was pulled from the original deal because of concerns over his medicals?

Never mind.

VV certainly had the sketchiest medical history. Interesting that the Phils still wanted him, but thought it significant enough to restructure the deal. I'm crossing my fingers that Luhnow and co. used it to their advantage and unearthed a Martes/Paulino-caliber gem in Arauz.

That's going to be a tough one because the Arauz the Astros got (Jonathan) is an infielder. The Arauz the Phillies got (Harold) is the pitcher.

I know. I meant that caliber of overall prospect. But if you mean that the current regime has yet to demonstrate the same talent for finding unheralded position players that they have for finding pitchers (including McHugh, Harris, Sipp along with the above), then I'd say ok you might have a point.

Not exactly Springeresque but did see this statistical note from Jonathan Mayo in the latest MLB pipeline inbox: Fisher (21 homers/28 SBs) one of just three players in the minors this year with a 20/20 season. One of the others? Jason Martin (23 homers/20 SBs).
