Hell yeah!
« on: September 28, 2015, 12:06:27 pm »
It's the last week of the season, and I have every reason to not only stay up late and watch my team, but to monitor loads of other games as well.

I don't care how we got here.  This is what you should love as a baseball fan.

Let's go!
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I've found myself scheduling and rearranging my evenings (and mornings) accordingly.  Games will end just after 1am here then I'll be all wound up and won't be able to get to sleep so my normal getting up at 5am will just not work.  Priorities...

I'm having all sorts of weird things run through my head about this week's games, many of them at least mildly amusing, and I'm terrified of saying any of them, terrified that they may jinx the Stros.  I can't remember many times I've exercised so much restraint.

God Bless you for doing so.

I am dragging today.

Me too.  1:05am finish time for me, got to bed around 1:30am.  One run lead over the last 3 innings with our tired bully on the mound is no way to slip gently into post-game sleep either.  I'll do this 5 more times, please.

So here's an unrealistic scenario.

Rangers win 3, lose 3
Astros win 4, lose 1
Angels win 5, lose 1

My head hurts.  What happens?

Nobody knows:

Rangers/Astros/Angels tie: Played in Anaheim or Arlington and then Arlington or Houston or maybe Anaheim too?

Something similar (3 way tie for second wild card) was on ESPN the other day and someone described to me that there would be two one game playoffs to determine the second wild card and then that team would play the wild card game.

Out tired bully was outstanding last night.  Sipp was magnificent, Perez did his job against his one hitter, and Gregerson nailed it down.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

So here's an unrealistic scenario.

Rangers win 3, lose 3
Astros win 4, lose 1
Angels win 5, lose 1

My head hurts.  What happens?

Assuming Minnesota is not in the mix for the wild card at that point, it goes to the tie-breaker rules, which designates the teams as A, B and C.  Given that the Astros have season series over the Angels, the Angels would have it over the Rangers and the Rangers would have it over the Astros, it goes to the next tie breaker, which is winning percentage against the other two teams.  The Angels would have the highest, followed by the Rangers.

EDIT:  I screwed that up.  Following from above:

The Angels get to chose their designation (A, B or C), followed the Rangers, and the Astros would have what's left.  Team A would host Team B, with the loser eliminated.  The winner of that game would host Team C, with the winner being the division champ and the loser being the wild card.  So if the Angels chose to be C, they'd clinch a post-season spot, but would have to play the division tiebreaker on the road.

Sounds like OU, Texas and Tech for the Big 12 title a few years ago.

So the same unrealistic scenario, and the Twins win out?  Team A hosts team B, Team B wins.  Team B hosts Team C.  Team B wins.  Does Team A then play the Twins, and then Team C plays the Twins if the Twins win the first game? Who hosts, and do they serve canapes?

Three way tie for division and tie with one club outside the division for one wild card spot...teams in the division would be assigned A, B and C as before, and the team outside the division is assigned Team D.  A hosts B and C hosts D.  If D wins, they are the wild card and the winner of A/B is the division champ.  If C wins, the winner of the A/B game would host C, with the winner being division champs and the losers being the wild card.  There are only two games, no matter what.

Unlike last year where the Big 12 simply decided to not have a champion rather than go through the tiebreaker scenarios.

Yep. That didn't seem to work out very well for them.
