The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Ashby sounds a lot like Bill Worrell, thinking this is the first baseball game anyone has ever seen.

T2:

Valbuena singles
Carter strikes out
Marwin singles, Valbuena to 2B
Castro grounds out 3-1, Valbuena to 3B, Marwin to 2B
Marisnick with a bunt single, but is called out on batter's interference.

So the Astros get three hits, but can't get a run

Don't run on Marisnick.

This Red Sox team is real easy to dislike. Primadonnas and dipshits.

Sort of, but the Astros pitchers haven't been very aggressive all series.

Ramirez with a leadoff walk
Sandoval singles to RCF, Marisnick guns down Ramirez at 3B
Victorino flies out F9
DeAza walks, Sandoval to 2B
Hanigan works the count full and then singles to RF, Sandoval scores, Victorino to 3B
Betts flies out F8

But the Sox pick up a run on two walks..lead 1-0 after two.

Holt singles to RF
Bogaerts with a sharp grounder to Correa, who can't come up with it.  Right at him, but ruled a hit.  Holt to 2B
Ortiz strikes out swiniging
Ramirez grounds into 4U-3 double play to end the inning

Nice job by  McCullers to clean that inning up.

Still 1-0 Sox

T4:

Valbuena...who has finally raised his average to.200...battling...works the count full...fouls off several tough pitches...finally works the walk.  Nice AB
Carter strikes out swinging at ball four and ball five
Marwin singles to LF, Valbuena to 2B
Castro flies out F7
Marisnick singles down the LF line, bounces off the wall right to the SS..Valbuena tries to score...and makes it, but Hanigan stuck his shin guard right into Valbeuna's leg.  Valbuena come up limping, but Astros tie it up 1-1
Altuve pops out F6

But the Astros tie it up...middle of four...1-1

No problem, you're forgetting that every MLB team carries more than just one backup middle infielder. They'd just put in... damn, I can't think of the guy's name for some reason. Weird.

Replay shouldn't be to sort out obvious calls that you blew terribly. But sadly, that's what it is used for half the time.

The DH can come into the game on defense.  He stays in the same spot in the order, and the pitcher than has to bat in place of the substituted player.

Yeah, the zone is tight, but it seems like it's been extremely consistent.

I agree.  He may have missed one here or there, but he's been pretty much right on, and consistent.

B5:

Hanigan with a leadoff single
Betts with a bouncer over a drawn in Valbuena for a double.  Hanigan to 3B.  Nobody out
Holt pops out F4

Strom out to the mound

Bogaerts grounds to 2B, Marwin fires to the plate and gets Hanigan!  Nice pick by Castro
Ortiz grounds to 2B...Marwin throws wide to 1B, but because Ortiz is basically walking down the line, no problem tagging him out.

McCullers again works out of a huge jam.

Uh, you clearly missed the pitch that was 6 full inches outside and the catcher had to lunge to catch that Tucker got rung up on apparently.

That pitch wasn't a strike in Little League.

I swear, he says shit purely to be contrary. Many games go by with no one raising an eyebrow at much of anything a crew does. When a game that's five innings in has featured two blown calls that any half-awake fan could see in real time on tv the game is simply disqualified from being well called. I mean, come on.

Sox go to the pen...righthander Ogando in

Carter with a leadoff walk
Marwin, turned around to the left side now...strikes out swinging
Carter steals 2B, as Hanigan makes Hank Conger look like Johnny Bench...but he may have come off the bag on the pop up...gonna get a challenge...and overturned...he's out.
Castro flies out F9 to end the inning

B6:

Harris in for the Astros

Ramirez grounds to SS, Correa lazily throws it in the dirt, Carter can't pick it.  TE6
Sandoval doubles to LF...Gattis bobbles the ball in LF, Ramirez scores on the E7
Victorino with a sac bunt, Sandoval to 3B with one out
DeAza  with a check swing grounder to 2B, Marwin checks Sandoval back and throw on to 1B for the second out
Hanigan with his third hit of the day, single to RF, Sandoval scores.
Betts walks, Hanigan to 2B
Holt with a drive to LCF...Marisnick with a leaping grab up against the wall!!!

But the Sox get to unearned runs on the two errors...lead 3-1 after six

T7:

Marisnick, who made the great play to end the 6th...strikes out
Altuve lines one past the 3B bag...but hits the stands and caroms back to the SS for a single
Tucker scalds one, but right at the SS...Altuve dives back to 1B
Altuve steals 2B
Correa homers to LF!!  Tied up again at 3
Gattis homers to LF!

Lefty Lane on for the Sox

Valbuena with a 2-out walk

Sox go to the pen again for the righty Matt Barnes...

Carter strikes out swinging.

But lots of shit happens in the inning, and at the stretch...Astros now lead 4-3

That call reversal on Carter at second was chickenshit. I hope they do something to address those plays. I know we've benefitted from them too, but I really don't like how all the emphasis gets put on the slide, and the fraction of a second that the careening body isn't contacting the base.

That was outside, but it wasn't a horrible call.  And yes, he's not been perfect.  But I think he's been pretty damn good.

You have lost your mind if you think that pitch was anything short of a horrible call. The catcher almost fell over trying to haul it in, and it was way off the corner as well.

You have lost your mind if you think that pitch was anything short of a horrible call. The catcher almost fell over trying to haul it in, and it was way off the corner as well.

See, and I'm the one who gets pilloried for having the temerity to disagree with you.

B7:

Harris working his second inning..Rasmus enters the game for Gattis and goes to RF...Tucker moves to LF

Bogaerts strikes out looking

And that's it for Harris, Sipp in

Ortiz...battling...full count...and walks
Ramirez homers to LF, Ortiz scores...Sox take a 5-4 lead
Sandoval flies out F8
Victorino flies out F8

But the Sox get a pair, now lead 5-4 after seven.

You committed no crime.  I agree that it was outside, but I didn't think it was *that* bad, as the catcher set up inside and had to reach out for it.  And again, I admit he's missed some.  I only disagreed that he's been terrible overall.  For that I all kinds of shit heaped on me and my character and integrity assassinated.

Is the way Ashby compounds the agony of long games by endlessly bitching about the length of games similar to what happens when we complain over and over about Ashby?

Also, today Ashby mentioned The Clash. I hadn't exactly been waiting for that to happen.

He made a play on words involving "I Fought the Law."  He knew it was a song but could not associate it with any musical performer.  A member of the crew said in one of he or Blum's ears that it was by The Clash to which Ashby responded with incredulity about that band performing the version that he was alluding to.

There's no way Ashby was ever able to crouch for half of a game without complaining incessantly to every hitter that can to the dish.  Perhaps that was his gift -- hitters couldn't wait to get the fuck out of the box.

Tucker reaches on an E4
Correa flies out F7...he just pulled off of that a bit
Rasmus, who entered the game for Gattis in LF....tries to bunt a 1-2 pitch, and fouls it back for a strikeout
Valbuena strikes out swinging to end the game.

Well hell.  Astros go down 5-4.  This one was disappointing.

I don't think it's too much to ask of a corner outfielder in that he try to drive in a run in that situation.

The Astros sweep the Royals and then drop two to a truly bad team.
