Magic Numbers
« on: September 12, 2014, 11:39:54 am »
As of today, the magic number for the Astros to finish ahead of the Rangers is 6.

Also, the Rangers need to finish on a +.500 run in order to avoid a 100-loss season.

The thought of them failing to avoid either or both of these ignominies warms my cockles.

At the beginning of the season, predicting that the Astros would have a better record than Texas, Boston and Colorado in September would have earned you a straight jacket.

Well, frustratingly, Texas has avoided a 100-loss season.  They also are hanging on to the Astros' tails, as the Magic Number to ensure the Astros finish ahead of them remains at 1.

It will be nice to finish ahead of the Rangers, but most significantly the Astros have secured the all important Silver Boot.

The only secure location for the silver boot, is up Nolan Ryan's arse.  IMHO.

And now it means twice as much!

For me, the finest moment in Silver Boot history was when it was accidentally broken under the Astros' care and needed to be replaced.  This was some ten years ago or so.

Yankees magic number to make the playoffs is -4. Breaks my heart.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy
