Find My iPad
« on: February 10, 2013, 09:58:39 pm »
So I lost my iPad last November in New York (I assumed it was stolen, but wasn't sure).  I did the whole "Find my iPad" thingy and eventually replaced it in December.

Today I start getting emails that my iPad has been located in Brooklyn and has been connected to WiFi (it's not 3G-enabled).  I have it locked through the "Find My..." service with a message that says something like, "Hey asshole, you stole my toy, call me at this number."

There's an option to erase the contents of the device, but that eliminates any chance that I'll get my hands on it again.  So three questions:

1) Biz - did you steal it?  Can I have it back?
2) Can the thief access any of my info?  ie: is there any risk to not erasing it?
3) Any ideas how to track it down?
Don't think twice, it's alright.

Oh man, what a bummer. However, I'm glad that kind of shit also happens to people younger than me. When I lose shit I always wonder if I'm starting to go senile. Then I see someone younger do the same thing and I realize I was just impaired too. Anyway...

1) Probably, he needed to replace the one he lost/left on a plane.
2) Unless you can get Biz to give it back, there is always a risk.
3) It might be cheaper in the long run to buy a new one than to pay the ransom and postage.

You obviously aren't familiar with the supreme court case Finders v. Keepers

If you have the data backed up or don't need it, then absolutely wipe it. At least the person won't be able to either use the device or access the data. I think your chances of getting it back are small.

This.

Even if you don't...erase it.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you're looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money... but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my tablet go now, that will be the end of it - I will not look for you, I will not pursue you... but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you... and I will kill you.

That stinks. My iPhone popped off of my belt clip at a McD's last year. I watched it drive up into Pennsylvania to his house via Find My iPhone. I had the advantage of telling the guy via the messaging utility that he was in possession of secured government computing resources and that "we" would be happy to pick it up at his house that evening or he could ship it back. 30 minutes later he replied with a tracking number.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

Did you give him GBB's message above?
