For all the "readers" out there...

While you're getting geared up for the new season, I highly recommend "The Baseball Codes" by Jason Turnow.  It's a look at the "unwritten" rules of the game.  When and why batters get thrown at...retaliation...when to put the brakes on stealing bases when you have a big lead (and what defines "big" in this case?).  It's more than that, however.  The chapter on kangaroo courts makes the book worth the read, IMO.  I highly recommend it.

Thanks, Clarkie! That's a book that has been long overdue. I'll have to find out if the "unwritten rules" are from the classical period of baseball, i.e., before the designated hitter, or are the watered down rules from the modern era, where pitchers can't throw inside, hitters strut up to the plate in kevlar armor and, at least in the Junior Circuit, the opposing pitcher doesn't get to face the other pitcher.

It'a fun read Hap, but probably more from your "watered down" era point of view. Lot's you already know, but still interesting to read about.  Especially during the VOID!
