The next Bautista?
« on: March 30, 2013, 01:21:13 pm »
I came across an article by a guy who has used a formula over the past few seasons to predict who the next breakout star will be. He looks at the leaders in HR/Fly Ball in the previous September to find outliers. This system has led him to pick Ben Zobrist, Jose Bautista, and Michael Morse during their breakout seasons. Granted, he did pick Brent Morel last year, so hopefully that is an exception to the system. Anyway, his pick for this year's breakout star: Jason Castro.

Castro did start start tattooing the ball with more regularity late last year, which could be attributed to getting healthy and used to playing at that level. He has continued hitting the ball with authority this Spring, which doesn't always guarantee regular season success. But, it is an interesting theory and he does appear to have turned a corner in his career. If his prediction does come true, this would be fantastic for the club and would really help speed up the return to decent.

It's at least nice to read something positive about a current Astro.

Yep. Not buying into the prediction at all—even if Castro has the breakout season we're hoping for, the model is still a joke—but the positivity does at least feel good.

That really was my point. It felt good to read something positive about a current Astro.

If Castro ever hits as many as even 25 homers in a season, I will be pleasantly shocked.

He wont' get enough ABs to do that. If he stays healthy, maybe 375 ABs?
