Position Summary - Outfield
« on: January 22, 2013, 09:14:29 pm »
Spring will be here very soon, and like last year, I thought I would take a stab at predicting who will end up where when the national anthem sounds for real.  I depend completely on secondary sources for this … no insider information.  This post deals with outfielders.

As far as I can tell, there are 36 players under Astros control that can be seen primarily as outfielders (not counting guys ike Ruben Sosa, Mike Kvasnicka, Kike Hernandez and Telvin Nash that were dealt with elsewhere).  Given the sometimes-smaller roster limits at lower levels, there are probably only 20-25 full-season roster slots.

I see four guys (JD Martinez, Fernando Martinez, Jimmy Paredes and Justin Maxwell) as potential starters in Houston with the odd man out getting plenty of playing time as well.  Brandon Barnes is the most likely 5th outfielder, though Trevor Crowe or even Rick Ankiel could play himself in during the spring.

AAA will be crowded, and as noted elsewhere, one of the odds-on favorites in the outfield (Marc Krauss) may end up filling in for Singleton at 1B early in the season.  Austin Wates and Robbie Grossman will probably be starters, and one of Crowe and Ankiel will probably make the team in a “AAAA emergency” role.  The last spot will probably go to Jake Goebbert or Che-Hsuan Lin with the other one being released.

George Springer and Domingo Santana will probably start in CF & RF at Corpus Christie, while newcomer Michael Burgess and holdovers Adam Bailey and Drew Muren seem the most likely candidates to join them.  Grant Hogue may also have a shot, but at 26 he is also probably on the chopping block if he does not show real progress in the spring.

Lancaster is beginning to be crowded with some real prospects.  I expect Andrew Aplin to return to CF (after his late-season promotion from Tri-City), flanked by Preston Tucker and (probably) Brandon Meredith (who seemed to really put it together last year).  Justin Gominsky, Chris Epps and Jordan Scott will probably compete for the final 1-2 positions with the other(s) headed to Quad Cities.

Teoscar Hernandez seems like the strongest candidate to join the losers of the Lancaster competition in the Quad Cities outfield, but (in decreasing order of probability) Dan Gulbransen, Terrell Joyce, Mark Wik and possibly Ariel Ovando should also be in the mix.  That still leaves some pretty strong talent in extended ST destined for Tri City or Greeneville.

Note:  I tried to rush Ovando last year, which probably means I have erred on the other side this year.  We’ll see.

First off, thanks for all of your work. These organizational summaries are just the kind of discussion that is missed during the void.

I'd be surprised if Ankiel didn't break camp with the big-league club.

Quote
"When you look at our outfield configuration, it was one of those things we knew we had to add another bat," Porter said. "We wanted to find a guy out there who was left-handed, given that J.D. Martinez and [Justin] Maxwell are both right-handed, and Ankiel was a good fit all the way around.

"He's a veteran guy with great leadership ability, and I think he's going to add to the leadership in our clubhouse and add to the leadership on the field, as well. You look at our roster, you look at the opportunity that presents itself, there's a definite opportunity for Rick to come in here and play well and be part of our 25-man roster."

Luhnow was equally as happy about signing Ankiel.  Luhnow supposedly (per Smith tweet) made a comment about FMart possibly losing his shot if he played in the WBC. Given that comment, and Porter's exclusion, makes me wonder if he isn't on the outside looking in. Which is a shame, because I like his potential.

Right now, I see some combination of Maxwell, Ankiel, and Paredes/J.D. in the OF and Barnes, Crowe, and FMart battling for the other two spots. I don't see Paredes or J.D. sitting on the bench, so one will be at OKC.

Another great job.  I think Ovando is at QC.  He made progress and I see the coaching staff at QC (Lopez - his manager the last two years and Coleman - OF specialist) being there to help him.  I will be surprised if I see Monzon make it out of ST.  Wik was the least impressive of the OF at Greeneville last year but was dealing with injuries so I expect him at TC. Really liked Toney and Joyce.

I hope you are right about Ovando.  I would like to hear more about Wik.  It seems to me that his plate discipline should help him move quickly, no?

Ankiel might make sense as a fouth or fifth outfielder - pinch hitter/defensive replacement. I would take him over Barnes who I think tops out at AAA. I wouldn't want Ankiel to take away playing time from Martinezx2, Paredes or Maxwell.

I don't think Maxwell has anything to worry about at this point.  Out of the others, it would be great if they forced Ankiel to the bench (with 2 of 3 outplaying him for a starting gig), but I don't know that it will happen.  Whoever from that group (Martinezes/Paredes) doesn't make the starting lineup is probably slated for AAA (not sure about FMart's options), I don't see them sitting on the bench.  With his skillset/mentality, I do like Barnes off the bench.  He doesn't have the potential that the other three have, so he won't benefit as much from getting AB every day like they would.  But, he does give a great RH defensive replacement if you need to replace one of the Martinezes in a game.

How good is Ankiel defensively?  I really haven't seen him much lately.  I know he has a good arm, but is he  considered a plus defender. or just better than what the Astros presently have?

His range has slipped a bit but he's still pretty good in the field. Not a minus defender, anyway.

I'm sure many of you remember that ridiculous strike from center field he threw against the Astros last year. But he's not a very good hitter at this point. Really not much of an upgrade from Bogusevic.

Per BA, Astros signed Raoul Torres (cut by D-Backs) ... not very impressive splitting time between Hi-A & AA last year.  Not sure where he fits, but his signing is probably bad news for some of the marginal players otherwise slotted at that level.

So with the announcement of minor league rosters yet the absence of any games to follow, I'll use this mini-void to look at my predictions.  The biggest surprises for me were at the MLB level with Ankiel playing his way into the regular position and JD being originally demoted to OKC.  Wates repeating at CC is also a bit of a surprise.

Hogue was rehabbing a shoulder injury when I was at ST.  He is a great clubhouse leader so he might stick around as a player/coach when he is rehabbed or he might get cut.

The big surprised for me was Ovando going the QC.  He was working out with the short season group when I was at spring training.  They must have seen some growth since then.

Yeah -- I tried to rush him to Lexington last year in my off-season ramblings, so this year I held back.  I'm not really surprised, though, based on what I read last year.

End of April and a business trip gives me some time on my hands, so … early season positional analysis:  Outfielders.

Houston
The OF emergency ward in Houston includes Fernando Martinez (5 for 23 in 7 games since returning from the DL), JD Martinez (.244/.271/.444 in 48PA subbing for F-Mart before going on the DL himself), Justin Maxwell (.234/.289/.390 before suffering a broken hand on a HBP) and Rick Ankiel (.189/.204/.528 with 32K in 54 April PA) who is suffering from dizziness and windburn.  I am hoping he retires when the other three are all healthy.  Meanwhile, Chris Carter (.227/.303/.454) led the squad in HR (6) and K (46) while playing LF (mostly) and Brandon Barnes (.375/.468/.525 in 47PA) saw time at all three OF positions (mostly RF) and provoked the question of what he would have to do to get regular playing time.  Robbie Grossman (.138/.242/.207) was recalled from OKC to take Maxwell’s position in CF.

Oklahoma City
Grossman (.324/.452/.353) was the regular in CF before his promotion.  Trevor Crowe (.312/.418/.452 and 9 of 11 in SB) split time with Che-Hsuan Lin (.227/.373/.242) in LF early in the season, but has moved into a full-time role since Grossman’s promotion.  Lin has seen about equal time at all three OF positions, but has been the regular in CF since then.  Jimmy Paredes (.358/.421/.579) saw significant time earlier in the season in RF, but has settled in at 3B more recently.  Marc Kraus (.333/.417/.679 with 6HR) has also seen time in RF (though he has mostly played 1B), but super-sub Andrew Simunic (.387/.459/.419) has been more or less regular there recently.  Simunic seems to hit wherever he plays at whatever level he is assigned, yet still manages to avoid “prospect” status.

Corpus Christi
Season 2 of the ER is being filmed in Corpus Christi, with first Domingo Santana (RF; .241/.343/.483) and then Austin Wates (LF; .317/.438/.467 and 9 of 10 in SB) spending time on the DL.  George Springer (.297/.407/.648 with 8 HR) has been a fixture in CF, clearly overmatching AA pitching.  Drew Muren (.147/.216/.206) was promoted from Lancaster to play RF in Santana’s absence, and Michael Burgess (.167/.227/.244), regularly the DH, spent time in LF in Wates’ absence.  Kike Hernandez has also appeared in two games in RF.

Lancaster
Preston Tucker (.281/.352/.490 with 5HR and only 17K in 108PA) started out in LF but moved to RF after Muren (.372/.449/.605) was promoted to CC.  Brandon Meredith (.222/.354/.349) started the season mostly as the DH, but has begun to spit time with Chris Epps (.209/.286/.349) in LF since Tucker moved to RF.  Andrew Aplin (.250/.368/.477) has been the regular in CF.

Quad Cities
Jordon Scott (.217/.347/.283) has gotten most of the starts in LF, but has also spelled regular CF Teoscar Hernandez (.297/.337/.440), who has also swiped 8 bases without being caught.  Ariel Ovando started the season in RF, but after struggling to a .169/.269/.271 line and 23K in 67PA he was sent back to extended spring training.  Terrell Joyce (.222/.310/.349) appeared some in LF early, though mostly he was the DH.  He seems to have taken over as the regular in RF since Ovando’s departure.

An early June business trip gives me another opportunity (after a short delay) to look at positional analysis after month #2:  Outfielders.

Houston
The OF continued to be in a state of flux in Houston as May stats show:
  Robbie Grossman (.220/.333/.256; CF-18; LF-12; OF-21) and demoted
Brandon Barnes (.209/.244/.302; CF-18; OF-20) transitioned to starter
Jimmy Paredes (.238/.279/.349; RF-17) and two infielder collisions
  J.D. Martinez (.299/.325/.506; LF-12; RF-3) coming off the DL
Trevor Crowe (.243/.300/.324’ OF-14) mostly as late inning replacement
Chris Carter (LF-9; RF-2) before being banished to 1B/DH (see corner infielders)
Fernando Martinez (.100/.182/.100 in 11PA; OF-4) before being demoted
Rick Ankiel (.222/.364/.222 in 11PA; RF-4) before beimng released
JD was the lone bright spot.  Justin Maxwell began his rehab in June, which probably means Barnes will lose PT … hopefully he will regain the effectiveness he had as a part-time player as well.

Oklahoma City
With Trevor Crowe and Jimmy Paredes getting called up, there were some changes at OKC.  Che-Hsuan Lin was the regular in CF improving his season line slightly to .236/.365/.304 with 10 SB.  Marc Kraus moved to LF from 1B, but also saw a lot of action at DH.  He slumped to .225/.382/.363 in May and .278/.399/.519 for the season.  Andrew Simunic (.230/.292/.253 in May; .271/.338/.297 for the season) saw the most action in RF (11), mostly early in the month.  He also saw time at 2B and 3B.  Austin Wates (.306/.346/.347) was a regular in either RF (9) or LF (6) after his promotion.  Fernando Martinez (.268/.333/.464) also saw action in RF (6).

Corpus Christi
Austin Wates was the regular in LF and ran his AA season totals to .310/.366/.431 with 11 SB in 12 attempts before his promotion.  Michael Burgess (.264/.376/.625 with 7 HR in May; .210/.297/.414 for the season) took over as the regular thereafter, and appears to be hitting his stride.  George Springer (.300/.412/.621 with 16 HR & 16 SB) and Domingo Santana (.253/.352/.482 with 8 HR & 6 SB) continue as the regulars in CF & RF respectively.  Both continue to suffer from high K-rates, though; ~30% for Springer and ~31% for Santana.  Drew Muren (.281/.324/.375 in May) is getting limited playing time as the backup, and JD Martinez put up a 1.000 OPS in 4 games on a rehab assignment.

Lancaster
Brandon Meredith (.288/.398/.589 in May; .257/.377/.478 overall) and Chris Epps (.361/.447/.667 in May; .304/.388/.548 overall) have split time in LF.  Meredith has gotten about twice as many starts there, but Epps has appeared in CF (1) and RF (2) as well as seeing a lot of time at DH.  Andrew Aplin (.333/.412/.517 in May; .298/.393/.500 overall) has been the regular in CF, while Preston Tucker (.342/.400/.553 in May; .314/.378/.524 overall with 10 HR) has settled in RF.  Both continue to show good plate discipline, with Aplin striking out only 20 times in 245 PA and Tucker 35 in 238.

Quad Cities continue to go with four more-or-less regular outfielders.  Teoscar Hernandez was the regular in CF, tailing off to a .222/.276/.343 line in May after a .297/.337/.440 April.  He was 7 of 9 in SB for May giving him 15 of 17 for the year.  Jordon Scott was the regular in LF along with backing up Hernandez in CF, and he surged to a .319/.473/.391 line in May giving him .271/.417/.341 for the year with 12 SB in 15 attempts.  Ariel Ovando (.133/.224/.147 in May; .149/.243/.201 with 48K in 153 PA) continues to struggle as the regular in RF and spent a week or so in EST.  Terrell Joyce played 10 games in LF and 12 in RF and slumped to .188/.317/.319 in May (.205/.314/.383 for the year).
