You see where Guillen said about Lopez?

Quote
“Very mature,” Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said sarcastically when asked about the incident. “He’s lucky I wasn’t Hanley. I would have chased his [rear] all the way to Puerto Rico.”

Why Puerto Rico?  Lopez is from Nicaragua.

And Ramirez is from the Dominican Republic. Maybe Guillen thought they needed a neutral site? Incidentally, it's apparently only mature if you give someone the ol' vagina eye first. Doing it in response is not cool. Or something. Thanks, Ozzie.

After Lopez walked back to the dugout and I was done laughing – which took a while – I had to explain to the missus about the double the previous inning, why Lopez plunked Hanley Ramirez and what a Hanley Ramirez is. Which, of course, required explaining what a Rusty Trombone is. Ah, baseball.

I believe it was discovered by German settlers in 1904, and of course in German means "whale vagina".

Andyzipp and I coined the nickname on Opening Day 2006 when some rookie came to bat for the Fish:

Andy wanted to know if a Hanley Ramirez comes before a Rusty Trombone, or after a Dirty Sanchez. After some thought, it was determined that the Handjob Ramirez is actually a component; it's the reacharound subset of the Rusty Trombone.

Ramirez went on to win Rookie of the Year, almost certainly because of me and Andy.

Can't you run through a gauntlet?
from Wikipedia:
Quote
Gauntlet or gantlet may mean:
Gauntlet (glove), protective gloves used as a form of armour
Gauntlet track, a section of two railroad tracks that overlap to allow them to pass a narrow bridge or tunnel in little more than the space of one track
Gauntlet (punishment), a corporal punishment, "Running the gauntlet"
So ... the last sense, running the gauntlet is actually a variant of the word gantlet that previous generations of writers screwed up for us.  A gantlet track (as explained on Wikipedia) is a place where the tracks narrow and overlap in such a way that two trains headed in opposite directions would collide, thus "running the ga(u)ntlet" became a metaphor for taking a risk.  Later usage lead to the "punishment" analogy (such as I experienced in basic training) where the punishee runs between two lines of punishers (use your imagination).

But gauntlet is simply an older term for glove ... especially the kind of heavy or armored glove worn by medieval knights.  Throwing one down was an insult and a challenge to a duel.  Picking it up was acceptance of the challenge.  It is never "raised" or "answered" ... perhaps the implicit challenge can be said to have been answered, but then the word "challenge" should be used somewhere.

When Tejada was on the Astros, was that spotlight thing as annoying to other teams and their fans as the Marlins' shit and the Brewers' shit are to me now? I can't remember if it was pretty much just Miggy, or if other players got in on the act. And I'm not sure Miggy was ever as serious and arrogant about it as Bonifacio and these other fuckers are.

More pedantry, but if it's trains, the phrase would be newer than I think it is.  I know I've heard it in cowboy movies that predated trains.  I also found reliable internet sources that said the phrase comes from a Swedish word, gantlope, that means track, and was used in the British navy by the 1600s.  It must be true, I read it on the internet.

Yeah -- you're right.  Gantlet tracks derived from earlier usage.  My bad on the history, though I stand by my original point on "raising a gauntlet".
