If you're in the Bay Area...
« on: March 14, 2012, 01:14:54 pm »
I saw Coppola's restored version in 1981 with his father conducting a full orchestra and the Polyvision three-screen process. It was breathtaking and there really isn't a cinematic experience I've had that compares. This will surpass that in almost every way. You lucky bastards.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

WOW! That would be awesome...  I wish I could see this. I just finished the Hornblower series (AE and ITV produced) and I'm starting the Sharpe series next week. I've been reading about Bonaparte ("Boney" is what several characters in Hornblower call him and it was hillarious to me) because of it. Going to see this movie would be definitely a must do on my list at this time.

I agree... lucky bastards over in the Bay Area.

The AE series on Hornblower doesn't do justice to the books, IMHO.  That said, my wife thought the actor playing Horatio was "hot."

In case anyone's interested, especially on today of all days, "Horatio" is Limey slang for a BJ.  Probably isn't much of a leap of logic to figure out why.

AS I recall, Sharpe was televised for BBC, and I thought it was good.  It starred Mr. Bean.

Well, it was very ambitious for them to try and I thought they did a yeoman's job (pun intended). Seeing as how they covered only about half of the Hornblower books (and focused on the Napoleanic wars), I was left at the end wanting more. I've read that Ioan Guffod (sp?) wants to re-do the Gregory Peck "Captain Horatio Hornblower" movie to carry on where the series ended. He's also said that the budget they had was very low compared to what the Master and Commander movie had to portray one of the Aubrey novels.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the Sharpe series, more about the time during the Napoleanic Wars is facinating to me.... now this will be a look at the infantry as opposed to the Navy. Nice!

Sean Bean, who many would know as Boromir from Lord of the Rings.

i must have had my Beans confused.  No wonder that series wasn't funny.

Yes to both.

I've got some of the Sharpe installments that were done by the BBC guys and they're pretty good--Bean is well cast.  The books are much better and Cornwell is probably today's premier spinner of historical yarns (see also his current series on the Norse seige of the British Isles).  My far and away favorite of his is his novel, "Agincourt."

I love the books, and while the BBC series is enjoyable and Bean is a terrific Sharpe, I feel that Harper is so woefully miscast and mis-written (hyphen?) as to suck a lot of the enjoyment out of it.
