Freese almost robbed him, and it would have been a two bagger.

mlb.tv took a shit during Carlos's at bat. I assume he hit a ground ball and Altuve was out at the plate. Was the IF in?

Goddamit Wallace.

Not a home run.

Yeah, I don't think so either. And Bourn played that ball great. They may even have had the play at the plate: Barmes was turning with the cut just as the runner was rounding third.

And why the fuck didn't the umpire go out to the fence and see if there was any evidence of the ball striking the pad, as there clearly is? Lazy fucker.

My guess: the umpires (and their cronies on replay in NY) didn't want to try to sort out the baserunner situation if they called the homer back. I think JD is exactly right on that.

And she beckons me to journey

Meanwhile in Corpus, Henry Sosa is dealing again.  5 IP, 2 Hits, 0 runs, 1 walk and 6 Ks.

I've seen Sosa pitch before. He's got a plus arm. Some serious doubt about his confidence though. Hopefully, he can figure it out for us.

according to the beat writer he has touched 96 tonight.  Also Hinze just hit his 5th homer since getting called up and now sports a 359 average and 1.000+ OPS.  If we have to platoon Wallace, how about letting Hinze get some swings.  Hinze turns 24 on Friday.

I saw him hit 95 several times in the same game. Usually was 92-94 when I saw him.

Altuve seems to be servicable at a minimum in the field. What was the knock on him recently?  Remember something about how they expected him to hit, but he was marginal in other respects.

He can field his position fine, the knock on him is that he is short.

I think Altuve looks pretty damn good in the field. Other than fucking up that popup last week he's made every routine play and a lot of more challenging ones. His arm is certainly stronger than I'd expected.

I did not grill the octopus. I simmered it for an hour and a half and then left it in the water as the water cooled to room temperature. Once the water was room temperature I removed the octopus and was easily able to scrape the tentacles clean of the skin and the suction cups. The result was easily the most tender octopus of any I have ever cooked. I have fucked up countless octopi, and frankly an animal as noble as that deserves better from the cook.

I took half of it and made a ceviche. I'll try ceviche with raw octopus next time. I made a tomato sauce with some nice romas I'd bought and added diced pieces of the remaining octopus and had it over rice.

I keep forgetting that I have 8 or so jumbo shrimp I bought along with the octopus yesterday. Those cost me $5 a pound and I surely have close to a pound of them. The octopus was close to three pounds raw. Nevertheless when I went over to pay the lady she said, Cinco Balboas, five dollars. I don't know what they charge per pound for the octopus but it obviously isn't much. Now that I have some idea what I'm doing I'm hope to cook a shitload of it.

I agree. He didn't look like he sucked to me. He has some problems with his command, but that is pretty common in ST.

I have never cooked octopi, but I seem to remember seeing something ( maybe Alton Brown?) saying something about having to do a quick cook or a slow cook, otherwise they turn out rubbery and tough. Something about how their texture changes in the cooking process. I wish I could remember what was said, but I never thought the discussion would come up for me. There is something about the octopus meat that makes it change from tough to tender to tough to tender again.
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

Also Hinze just hit his 5th homer since getting called up and now sports a 359 average and 1.000+ OPS.  If we have to platoon Wallace, how about letting Hinze get some swings.  Hinze turns 24 on Friday.

That is ridiculous. Do you really think that the Astros would consider promoting anyone from High-A to Double-A to MLB in the course of just a few months?!?!?

I agree. He didn't look like he sucked to me. He has some problems with his command, but that is pretty common in ST.

In 7 innings dude struck out 9, one walk, three hits. One run, not earned. He also laid down a sacrifice bunt, so we know at least he can bunt better than Altuve.

I think the connective tissue can get very gelatinous and needs to be cooked slowly for a long time or very fast over a fucking hot fire. I will do two things in the future. One, I will cook it super quick over a nuclear hot fire on some of my special Soná carbón. Two, I will try a method I read about which entails putting the octopus in a dry baking pan and putting the pan over a medium heat. The octopus will supposedly release a considerable amount of liquid which it will eventually stew itself in. You cover the pan and continue to cook for a couple of hours.

The fucking Cardinals have some live arms in the bullpen. I still love the number of meltdowns that bullpen has had though.

So does it ever become not rubbery? Every time I've ever had squid it's been like chewing on rubber bands. Maybe I've never had anybody prepare it properly.

After some pretty shoddy infield signings/trades, Wade has seemed to landed a good one in Barmes.

Squid is very easy to prepare and have it turn out fine. As I've said, I've fucked up more octopi than I can count. All rubbery as hell. I just didn't know you either have to cook them gently forever or flash them over a very hot fire.

I think Altuve knows he can play the game at this level. Of all the things that I'm worried about with respect to the Astros Altuve's confidence level is pretty close to last on the list.

Maybe, maybe not, but it sends the wrong message.  It also denies him the experience of a meaningful pressure AB. Not to mention, it doesn't make much sense on any other level either.
