Power arms?
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:32:04 pm »
I know its not the end-all-be-all of pitching... but... who do the Astros have in the entire system that could be considered a 'power arm?' For purposes of this discussion, let's just define 'power arm' as anyone that hits 98 mph on the gun on an occasional basis.

Melanchon? Jorge De Leon?  Anyone else (including draftees)?
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Power arm is usually 94mph on up.  The venerable Brad Ausmus once said that there is basically not appreciable difference between a good 94mph fastball well located at the knees and anything in the upper 90s.  The key is location.  But for argument sake, try anything above 94mph as a power arm.

I think Melancon can touch 95 very occasionally but normally he tops out around 92-93. Fulchino can get it up there to 95.

If Armstrong signs, that's another one.

@VUHawkTalk @zacharylevine In Jack's last appearance, his last 13 pitches were 96, 97, 97, 96, 98, 96, 96, 97, 98, 97, 96, 97, 96

Makes sense. Fireballer(?) maybe? What I'm trying to figure out is if there is anyone in the system that can dial it up to 98 (maybe 97) on a here-and-again basis, but a further breakdown on power arms would also be of interest.

Okay, so here are the new and improved questions:

Which Astros pitchers throughout the entire organization could be considered: (1) Power arm (defined anything "above 94mph"); and (2) Fireballers (defined as hitting 98 on a hear and again basis).

So far, we have a couple of each:

1- (power arms): Mark Melancon, Bud Norris, others?

2- (fireballers): Jorge DeLeon; Jack Armstrong, others?

Looks like most (if not all) of the pitchers in the organization that can sit 94+ are bullpen arms.  A quick list would include :

Danny Meszaros
David Carpenter
Casey Fien ?
Blake King
Chia-Jen Lo
Matt Nevarez
Brandt Walker
Rodney Quintero

I would think (and hope) there are a few that I am missing.

Hadn't realize there were that many. Who fast does Meszaros throw?  What about the kidd (Ness? maybe that was sharing closing duties with DeLeon last season with the ValleyCats?

Perfect Game USA notes on Gandy Stubblefield: LINK

23. GANDY STUBBLEFIELD, rhp, Lufkin HS
Fast riser; + projection at 6-4/190; loose/fast arm, FB touches 94-95, raw mechanics, CU/CH still developing.

Well, according pitch f/x data from the AFL in '09, Meszaros' average fastball velocity was 92.76 with a max velocity of 93.9.  Meszaros Velocity

Ness fails to touch 90 in this scouting video.

Looking at that list shows that having velocity alone doesn't get you much.

When I saw Meszaros in CC, his FB reached 95 a few times.  Didn't play that fast though.  For that matter, I would imagine Folty reaches the mid 90s some.

Folty would certainly fall into the power arm category.

There are other relievers in the system that fit there too though will likely not pan out.  Yordany is an example.
