SPlit Squad, 3-2-2011

FotF vs. Detroit
SBB vs. Yankees

Just in case we want to discuss this. I'd prefer to listen to Bourn, Wallace, and Norris vs. NY, but We get Pence and Happ (who I like).

Steele leads off with a double @ Detroit, at least.
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

After Steele's double in the first, Pence gets an RBI. middle of 2, Astros lead 1-0.

In the other game, Wallace makes his first out, hitting into a double play.

Happa and Norris both work quickly through the first, but Norris has just given up a run in the 2nd.

FotF singled him in.

Happ has surrendered a single thru 1.1.

Norris finishes the 2nd inning, probably coming out. 1 hit, 1 run, 1 BB.

Happ finished, facing 7 batters in 2 innings.

Steele has another hard hit ball to Inge, forces a quick throw by running hard, makes it on for the 2nd time on the error.

....and makes it to 2nd on another error when they tried to pick him off.

The Busriders had some info on him. Off the top of my head, he is a 5 tool type player, but struggled last year. Interesting kid to watch. I have no idea where they project him.

Think he's projected to be on the training table...

Steele is a 5-tool guy who I 'think' the organization has been very high on.  He's been injured all 3 seasons he has played in thusfar though (at least the last 2, I can't remember if he was injured when he played with Tri-City or not).  Had a great partial season in Lancaster, but struggled last year at Corpus. My best guess is that he'll start the season in Corpus again this year.

I know they're high on him.  He's very athletic and does have all 5 tools.  The injuries have frustrated the Astros tremendously.  He's played a lot of center field.  Over the long haul that is likely to change, esp if the injuries continue.

Jordan Parraz, ex Astro busrider, drops a line drive from Towles. Shuck bunts and a bad throw to first gets Towles to 3rd. Downs sac fly score Towles.

Shuck looks very comfortable at the plate. Didn't look all that great in left.

Astros put a bow on it in Lakeland and get 2011's first win, 6-3.

DoRay aren't acting in horror so hopefully it's just Castro rolling his ankle and not some imperialist plot.

I still don't like our pitchers' strikeout to walk ratio. Way too many free passes.

Defense is falling apart in the ninth. Infield single to Downs. Villar whiffs on a double play ball. Single to left loads the bases. Mier throws a bad one which Villar drops on force ot at second. Wild pitch scores a run. Single scores two. Game is tied. Still no outs.

Pitch out. Garcia throws the runner out. Villar looks bad on another hot grounder. Runner on first. One out.

Arguello walks a batter. First and second. Kvasnicka boots a double play ball but recovers and gets the out at first. Second and third, two outs.

9 BF 8 reached (albeit 2 on errors).  Could have been a better outing for the Pride of Nicaragua.

the DP ball may have made it a short inning.

True ... And Kvasnicka picks up (or not) at 3B where he left off last year.  I'm thinking RF would be a much better fit for him.  Top to bottom we have fielding "issues" at the hot corner.

Granted, it's a small sample size. However, I am a bit troubled more by the lack of strikeouts than the walks at this point. The pitchers should be ahead of the hitters at this point. That doesn't portend well for later when the hitters catch up. Of course, most of the pitchers who have gone thusfar won't be on the team come opening day, so maybe you're right: much ado about nothing.

Happy only always says the Astros will win the pennant before spring training starts.  Once they've lost a couple of grapefruit games, it's time to call the cellar.

Who rattled your cage, Bench??? I remain steadfast in my belief that the Astros in fact will win the pennant this season and every season for that matter.

It might not be.  However, the mere fact that we're averaging several times more walks than strikeouts gives me a tad bit of heartburn at this juncture.
