Dining in Galveston
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:12:59 pm »
So if I don't want to put money in Tillman's pocket, what is there?

I know about the institutions like Gaido's, etc.  But I'd like something a little more interesting than catch of the day.  Recommendations?

My favorite place in Galveston is Mosquito Cafe.  They have a great bakery and the food always seems fresh!

For hole in the wall mexican food, Nopalitos III just off of 61st. It's much better than the original(?) Nopalitos on 42nd.

What about Nopalitos II, which I assume is on 53rd?

Rudy and Paco on Postoffice. I've eaten there three times, and it was delicious every time. They do have a dress code though.

It's pretty good, but the waiters wear hats.

I like Benno's or Shrimp n Stuff, and both have some character.  You order at the counter, and there are paper napkins.

Ate @ Shrimp N Stuff last time down there.  It was quite good.

We're staying at the Galvez if there's anything good near there.

There is a thoroughly acceptable Vietnamese place on Broadway at about 31st or so if I recall correctly. It's on the north side of Broadway.

The Spot is really good. They've got a webcam on the dock that faces the seawall, so you can call your friends back home and wave at them over the intarwebs. It's biker-friendly and kid-friendly at the same time (you'll see what I mean), and some folks bring their pooches with them to sit outside. Last time we were down there, they had some good happy hour food and beverage specials.

The Original Mexican Restaurant on 14th (and Market, I believe) is very good. Potent drinks, great Tex-Mex, almost always good service. I mean, nobody's ever rude, but they get packed so every once in a while service is slow.

The Cajun Greek on 61st has great seafood sammiches.

Never once had a problem with seafood or service from Gaido's. Not Fertitta-owned, and very good food.

I second Mosquito Cafe, great food and good service.  They also serve breakfast all day on Sunday's if I remember correctly.
Cafe Michael Burger is good and I've heard good things about the 901 Postoffice, The M&M Restaurant and Shrimp n' Stuff.  Also had a good breakfast at Star Drug Store.

We ultimately settled on Gaido's.  The Lady wanted some shrimp, so shrimp she got.  Sizable and blackened, with a preposterously pungent side of bleu cheese grits.  My amberjack was suspiciously rectangular, suggesting that it had been previously frozen or otherwise processed, but it was still pretty flavorful.

Mosquito Cafe next time, I suppose.  We figured out a great way to get a room at the Galvez for cheap, so we'll be repeating this trip again.

Bleu cheese grits? Sounds like they've been tinkering with the menu again.

I haven't been to Cafe Michael Burger in 20 years... it used to be really good, but I'd forgotten it was there. :(

I had some shrimp with goat cheese grits at Brennan's today.  Delectable indeed.

Adding in the Saltwater Grill on Postoffice...it's a little on the pricey side, but it's fantastic.  Not a huge place, and can be very crouded at times.  The little lady and I love the place and go there every time we make it down there.

Cafe Michael Burger survived the storm, but not the ensuing economic downturn.

It still lives on the west side of the island past the seawall. Went there about a month ago.

If you liked Shrimp n Stuff, try Bennos.  I think the po' boys at bennos are better, the hush puppies are decidedly better, and they have Shiner on draft.
