MLB Umpiring: Still terrible

The following has to be most emblematic of the entitlement mentality of most of today's umpires:

Quote
Minutes after the game, Cuzzi said that he had not yet seen the replay. "I'll look at it, but I figured I'd eat first," he said. "(Blanco) made a decent attempt to put the tag on him. That's what it looked to me, and that's why I called him out."

So... which is worse?  "I'll look at it , but I figured I'd eat first"?  Or "(he) made a decent attempt to put the tag on him... and that's why I called him out"?
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

maybe it is just me, but i do not think "decent attempt"= "tagged."
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I want us to be awarded outs when Lee makes a decent attempt to catch the ball.

Or just one out when he makes a decent attempt to avoid a double-play.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

What are they supposed to do when they aren't in position to see the actual tag?

Watch the replay.  He was in position.

The call not only changed the outcome of the game, but also completely changed the course of two division races, and the Wild Card, in the National League.

Really?

NL East - Mets were 5 games out, in 3rd place, and would've stayed in 3rd either way.
NL West - Giants were 3.5 games out, in 2nd leading the Rockies by 1/2-game, ended up in 3rd trailing the Rox by only 1/2-game.
NL Wild Card - I guess this is the best argument as the Giants would've taken the lead (but only by 1/2-game over two teams) and the Mets ended up one game behind them instead of three.

With ~70 games left to play and the wild card race as crowded as it is, it seems a little early to be saying that one game completely changed any race.

I have no problem with him eating first. The game is over. Rushing to the replay won't change that. It sounds somewhat uncaring to make the statement, but I don't mind if he takes care of a few things and then really concentrates on reviewing the game before making comments or penning a heartfelt resignation letter.
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

Jim Joyce has set a really high bar for umpires and regret nowadays.  Cuzzi pretty much slapped everyone back into reality.

At the risk of threadjacking this into oblivion - which would be bad because bashing incompetent and arrogant umpires is an important topic - the opening sentence of the 2nd paragraph contains one of my many petty annoyances with using correct tenses.  It's a "tied game", not a "tie game".

That is all.

It's probably been a while since TSN employed writers who paid attention to anything other than emotion.
