Puma willing to waive his no trade?
« on: May 06, 2010, 03:06:59 pm »
Possibly.  MLBTR post citing Solomon article.
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I ain't rushing him out the door, but I totally agree with his comments.  Except that the Astros cannot avoid "baseball purgatory", seeing as they are already in it up to their nuts.

According to talk radio in NYC, Oswalt is still about to be traded to the Mets.

I read Solomon's article earlier.  It smelled of JdJO.

But in the likely event I'm missing something, please help me understand.  Here's the scenario, as I understand: Some contending team is going to trade for Berkman, and the Astros will listen because they are out of contention.

I have to assume this is predicated on Berkman hitting like the Berkman of past seasons?  But if Berkman were to start hitting like his old self, along with Lee and Pence doing likewise, wouldn't the Astros likely be in contention.  Hell, they don't even have to be in contention. Drayton does not rebuild, period.

Not knocking the link or MLBTR.  I just don't see how any of this makes sense.  They sure as hell aren't trading Berkman the way he's playing now.  To me, this is Solomon trying to stir the pot.

He's got a good idea.  Except.  That option is a club option.  Wherever he's dealt could exercise it.  Then he's stuck there for another year.  On the other hand if not, he could resign here and never miss a beat.  The Astros don't have a 1b waiting in the wings anyway.

Thinking about trades past, I would think 1/2 a season of Berkman for a contender with the understanding that they won't exercise the option should bring the Astros 1 or 2 high quality prospects but not really more.

That can all be negotiated in the trade.

I believe that, as a veteran in the midst of a contract (and you don't know how old it makes me feel to refer to Twinks as a verteran), he becomes a free agent at the end of the season if traded, club option or no.

Also, Carlos Lee has the physique of a first baseman...

I believe this was removed in the last CBA.

Last I recall on the matter, people were talking about Tejada having the ability to opt out of his contract after '08. I don't know if the rules have changed since then, but I imagine it'd be the same type of situation.

I think it's one of the MLBPA's inviolate rules.

If a player has five or more years of service, and is traded in the middle of a contract, he can demand a trade from the team he was traded to.  If the new teams does not trade him, he can elect free agency.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Good to know he's not "pulling the plug on this team yet."

He may not be ready to pull the plug, but one of his mates is "ready to go home."

Lance hits the nail on the head re last four Astros seasons: “If you're running a team, you don't want to get caught in baseball purgatory — where you're not really getting young and you're not really (competing). Where you're in this deal where every year you're signing a marginal veteran and you just never get in the mix.”
