Blum at SS?
« on: March 29, 2010, 02:22:44 pm »
Blum sure seems to be playing a lot of SS this spring. For example, in today's game, Keppinger is at 2B but Blum is at SS. Surely we're not thinking of giving a 37 year old who is not blessed like Omar Vizquel much playing time there. If I was pitching, I'd be pissed. Blum has little to no range.

Manzella is hurt.
Keppinger can't hit anyone who throws with their right hand, and isn't anything to write home about in the field.
Maysonet is, as best I can tell, a 2b.  As is Kaz.

IOW, if Manzella is hurt, we're fucked.

Glad you're in mid-season form Coach!

Blum has (reportedly) played some good "D" at SS.  I don't think anyone thinks he can be the everyday guy there, though.  Manzella's a kid and should be back soon, but limping into the season is never a good thing.

Honestly, I'm kinda surprised they haven't tried Feliz at SS.  He looks pretty good at 3B, I guess they want him to settle in there.

Feliz has appeared in 26 games (15 starts) at SS, though his last start there was 2006.

Yeah, I guess I didn't express myself very well there...I was just thinking that Feliz shows exceptional range for a 3B (and his arm goes without saying), so he could probably play the position better than Blum.  However, I understand why they're not doing that.  These dudes ain't robots and you can't just grab Happy Peter and tell him "Hey, welcome to the Astros! You're excellent at third, and that's what we told you you'd be playing when we signed you a couple of months ago, so let's move you over to short!"

Why not? It's April 1, after all.

And Johnson's at 3B, batting behind Feliz in order, where he hit his seventh HR of the spring. En fuego, he is.
