po-boy shop
« on: April 27, 2008, 01:45:34 pm »
I very much enjoyed an oyster po-boy and cup of gumbo at BB's before today's game. It's a fairly new place on the northwest corner of Montrose and Westheimer that's pretty much a glorified shack next to a dry cleaner tucked behind the Valero on the corner. They have embarassing menu names ("bedtime on the bayou" is a shrimp po-boy) and some of the tackiest art I've ever seen, but man they know what they are doing with their food.

Good tip. I'd never visit the place on my own accord - I go by there all the time but I don't think I've ever even noticed it - but I'll check it out. Thanks.

You would never notice it if you weren't looking. I read about it in the chronicle a couple of weeks ago but forgot about it until a buddy of mine from Louisiana was raving about it last night. It is worth seeking out.

it's hard for me to take the advice of someone that eats "poor boys" over at the houston press,
although yummy mcyummerson over at the chron makes a strong case.

it's hard to find a place that has the right kind of bread for a po-boy.
thanks, again, for the tip - can't wait to check it out!

The owner is actually a friend of mine, he ran track at UH.   The Roast Beef po boy is fantastic.

They are opened till 4AM too, it makes for some nice late night eats too.

Went there for lunch today.  It is very good.  We almost drove right past it though.

I wish I could've remembered the name of this place. I went to Houston this weekend for my mother's birthday. We were hungry for some grub Saturday afternoon and stumped for a place to eat. She lives in the heart of Montrose, so we were about to go to Niko Niko's when I remembered this thread. Unfortunately the only other place around that corner that she was familiar with was Alladin, so we drove around the area for five minutes in vain before deciding on lunch at Barnaby's.

Next time I'm in Houston, I'm gonna check out BB's.

SnS comes through again. My wife and I were in Houston yesterday staying with some friends in the Westheimer and Montrose area, and we needed to grab something before we headed out for the evening. I remembered this recommendation (well, I remembered that people had recommended a po-boy shop around there, UrbanSpoon remembered the rest), so we headed over there. It was great! My wife had the oyster and shrimp po-boy and loved it. Because it was Friday and one of the the cooks is from Puebla (!), they were fixing chiles rellenos, so I went unconventional and had that. It wasn't a poblano pepper, but it was stuffed with chopped steak and poblano pieces, and it was pretty good; the tomato sauce was really good. They also make a steak-and-poblano po-boy that looks pretty good; I'll try that next time.

Anyway, thanks to the folks who pointed this place out, and here's another thumb's up.

I've been meaning to say that I visited this place a couple of months ago. The food was OK. I got a po-boy that I think was half oyster and half catfish. It was good but not revelatory. What surprised me is that inside the shop there is plenty of comfortable seating. It's quite bright and comfortable in there. I'd assumed that it was a dingy counter for takeaway only. Once again, I was wrong.
