Backe and Geary
« on: May 14, 2009, 08:40:17 am »
Geoff Geary might be feeling very, very nervous about Backe's progress back from the DL.  To my eyes, Geary looks like the odd man out at that time.  For some reason, he has absolutely nothing this year.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

He should feel nervous regardless of Backe's progress. I don't think he could be successful at AA with the slop he's throwing.

No one should feel nervous because of Brandon Backe.  Backe has NEVER been effective pitching in relief, and hasn't looked great in his rehab assignments.  Of course neither did Moehler, and he's back in the rotation.

And while it's disappointing that Geary is floundering this year, it's not ever really surprising when a relief pitcher isn't consistent year over year.  It's part of the reason that they ARE relief pitchers.

I love to watch Backe pitch when he's on, but at this point I don't see him as the solution to anything.  Wade is supposed to be a whiz at putting together a bullpen, I am hoping he has something up his sleeve.

Footer: Coope thinks Geary might be hurt

Which is, of course, why he keeps running him out there.

Wade is whizzing up his sleeve?  That IS a problem.

Most of Backe's relief work was when he was with Tampa Bay and new to pitching. I doubt Wade wants to see him in the rotation, but they also aren't likely to just release him when his rehab time's over, so why not see if he can ramp up that adrenaline into some extra mph in one-inning stints?

Backe's control is so shaky that I'd be worried about bringing him into situations with men already on base. That really limits his spots.

And they'll be ok when Coop moves Paulino back to the pen or is demoted when Backe gets put in the rotation.

Ty mentioned to me that at a spring game that I missed Geary was complaining about (if I have this right) an ointment that had been applied to his bicep, so if there's something to the idea of biceps tendinitis it would appear that he's been struggling with it since the spring.

He struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced that day but complained about the heat of the ointment he had put on before going out.

Backe has NEVER been effective pitching in relief...

This is untrue. He was practically unhittable out of the pen in EA's MVP Baseball 2004. He was sharing closing duties with Lidge by May, and finished with an ERA under 1.00. It always made me a little sad that for all Brandon's success, Duane Kuiper never did get his name right.

This is an excellent point. For me, I never wanted to relieve. I just had to do it  because I wasn't consistent either.

I closed because there was never much use for a starter that only lasted 2 innings.

Closer is a little different, because they kind of have to be consistent.  Middle relief, realistically, is hope for the best, plan for the worst, because you rarely know what you're going to get year to year.

I did some of that too, although the closer role was nonexistent when I played. The fireman role was in vogue. But you had to crap out as a starter first before you got shuttled off to that role.

I was as shocked as anyone else that the JV summer ball coach wanted me of all people to close out games for him. I was pulling double duty playing first some and PHing a lot for the Varsity summer ball team and pitching and PHing some on the JV summer ball team.

Since they are arguably the least effective/consistent/good pitchers on the team, it helps if you're not running them out there every day, too.
