Good.  I will be more happy when they start guaranteeing salaries.  Thise guys contracts are not worth the paper they are written on, outside of siging bonuses and what they make in the current year.  They are all an injury away from being a discarded peice of meat.

The NFL cap, as I understand it, is fixed according to a percentage of league revenues - so I don't see how it's a matter of being tone deaf.  If they're running a successful business, good for them.

This is why I don't get the outrage when players hold out.  If the contract isn't worth anything, it's a two way street.  The team is damn sure going to cut a player as soon as they feel his production doesn't equal his pay.  The NFL really needs to copy the NBA's salary structure, starting with set rookie contracts.

They probably didn't have a problem cashing the upfront signing bonus, which is the equalizer from their perspective.

The signing bonus doesn't make sense from the owner's perspective, though.  You're paying a ton upfront for someone who hasn't even suited up for you in the case of rookies and free agents.  It's just one big mess.  Things are created to balance out one sides perceived advantage and that ends up only causing more problems, like the franchise tag for example.

Considering players are guaranteed 60% of all revenue, it is very hard to feel bad for them.

Not much different than the NBA (57%) and MLB (no fixed %, usually between 50-60).  Both sides in the NFL are rich, I just think non-guaranteed contracts create a lot of problems that could be avoided.

The soft cap, including the trade parity rule, is, IMHO, one of the few things that the NBA does right.

I think the NBA has the best salary system of the major sports.  Rookie contracts don't cripple teams, teams that drafted superstars have the best shot at keeping him thanks to the way max contracts work and as you pointed out, matching trades has proven to be a good system.  It's just a shame the same kind of thought or effort has never been put in to fixing the officiating.
