Houston downtown hotels?
« on: May 13, 2008, 08:47:15 pm »
I could use some info on some downtown hotels.  If anyone has any recommendations on some hotels near Minute Maid which are nice, affordable and possibly have a shuttle to the games then that would be appreciated.  Also, looking to go to the Red Sox games at the end of June but see it is SRO already.....anyone know the best place to get some tickets........stubhub?

Hilton Americas will be the best value downtown. You can walk to the yard. Apparanatly those games are sold out, so e-bay and stubhub are your best bets. If you're intent on going to the games, there will be tickets at a premium available outside the gates.

Anybody have any experience with the Magnolia Hotel on Texas Ave?
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

It's not a bad place to stay at all.

Check for cancelations at The Inn at the Ballpark.  It's right across the street and has a great bar.

My wife and I stayed at the Inn during 4th of July week last year and we loved it.  We got the package that includes the breakfast buffet and complimentary valet parking.  Also, it's hard to beat walking from your hotel room to your ballpark seats in 7 minutes.  Our only complaint was that the bathroom was pretty cramped, but

"Affordable", however, is a subjective term.  Well worth it if you're going to see a couple of games though.

Well, the "love toilet" does take up a little extra space.

I've stayed there before with one of my daughters and enjoyed it, but since I'll have the wife I was looking for something a little less baseball-themed.

I'd be interested to know prices.  My last two trips I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on the other side of the Convention Center.  A short walk to the ballpark.

I'll be in Houston in early June. Not necessarily looking to stay downtown (I'll have my car) so is there another part of town that's decent yet has the cheaper hotels?

Not really. For a city with a ton of hotel rooms, very few of them are conveniently located.

Reuben:  Holiday Inn across 610 (West Loop) from the Galleria.  used to be a courtyard.

A few nice hotels south of the Galleria that might have good weekend rates....Embassy Suites, Courtyard, Homewood.  One a LITTLE further south on Sage that's just changed to Hyatt....Summerfield Suites.  If you're not weekending, then I'm not sure WHAT to recommend rate wise.

There's also a Holiday Inn at Kirby and 59 that might be reasonable on the weekend.  Can't think of anything else except to say DON'T STAY AT THIS PLACE!!!

I stayed there and liked it. You can walk to the ballpark from there. No restaraunt, bit a nice little coffee shop and there's plent of places to eat nearby. The room was nice.

I've had great luck with Priceline.  If you've never used it, check out this message board for bidding tips.  First check out the Hotel FAQ, and then look down at the "Texas-Houston" section to see the hotels others have been getting.

Enjoy that powerpoint on the hotel to avoid.  It's an oldie but goodie that's been around the block a time or two, but it's always a funny read.  I probably could have come up with a better link than THAT one, though.

That's like my experience at the Best Western in Boulder,  Colorado.  If you ever have occassion to be in Boulder, do NOT stay at the Best Western.  They are thieves and credit card frauds.

Ditto for the Hilton in Fort Collins.  Avoid it.  The Embassy Suites Airport in Denver, however, is a keeper.

I stay with friends when I come to town so no hotel expense. When I have stayed overnight, I like to stay across the street at the Inn at the Ballpark. A little pricey but very very nice.
