Apple’s new Hollywood deal: Death of the DVD?
« on: May 01, 2008, 12:49:38 pm »
From the article:

Quote
The news that Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes let slip in a conference call on Wednesday — that from now on Warner Bros. movies would come out as video on demand the same day as the DVD — turns out to be bigger than he let on.

Apple on Thursday announced that not only would Warner Bros. titles be available for purchase on the iTunes store the same day and date as DVD release, but so too would movies from 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Studios (DIS), Paramount Pictures (VIA), Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SNE), Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.

How much space do those downloads take up?  When you upgrade your storage  will you have to transfer your files?  If it's remote storage, what's the upkeep cost?  DVDs are very easy to store and they are acceptably stable.

Plus if you're into it they usually come with lots of extras.

I think the point here is that DVDs cost a lot for the studios to produce and sell, so they will encourage us to download movies which costs them next-to-nothing in distribution.  Hard drive storage is as cheap as chips these days, but there is still the issue of losing and/or having to re-download your movies if your computer bites the big one.  Of course, the studios won't give a fuck about that, because they're making more money than ever on movie sales/rentals.

I think you're over estimating the common american's willingness to buy something they can't touch.

I think it'll get there, but I don't think it's in the next 5 years.

I'm addicted to video-on-demand from my cable company.   I think that form of digital delivery will be around a while.   I can't stand watching movies on my computer (let alone cell phone).

I agree in re on-demand.  But for the most part, people don't network their cable or satellite boxes, (more than 40% don't have anything but OTA television)and people still go to Wal-mart, target, Best Buy, whatever to buy or rent movies.  I think, like apple users in general, it's a very small percentage of households that are ready to download movies as a regular way of obtaining them.

I sure as hell don't know how to do it.
