If you have not already done so, get thee to Dan's, Fran's, and/or Dirty Martin's.  Them's some good greaseburgers.

Then Wally's where they'll try to up-sell you on jalapeƱos ("they're good for digestion!") and Boat House where I suggest you finish off with a hot fried apple pie smothered in icing.

I'm partial to Top Notch Burgers and their onion rings, but Dan's and Dirty's are pretty good burgers, too. I remember the onion rings at Dan's as being pretty good, too.

Hut's is still 'elite' ... it's just that their prices have caught up to their reputation.  More burger for the buck at Dirty's.

Are these in Houston?  I'm on a personal quest for the perfect burger.  So far I think Langford's Grocery is my #1 spot with Christian's Totem coming in 2nd.

Lankford is great. Goode Co. makes a mean burger and terrific fries and onion rings. Have you been to Southwell's?

Burger Tex, Frans', and Dans' = Good Burger!!!

I'm on my way to the 290 Cafe in Manor for lunch. Great "blue plate specials" kind of place. Not quite as good as Dots in Pflugerville... but then what is?

If you are ever anywhere near Pt. Arthur, and I don't know why anyone who did not already live there would be, make a bee line for Larry's French Market on Pure Atlantic and order the double meat cheeseburger.  A pound of heaven is worth the resultant clogged arteries.

P.S. I favor the 1980 season, FWIW.

Down in Surfside, there was a hut called Murphy's. I don't know if it is still there, but for a couple of dollars, he would form up a pound of ground beef, bread it, deep fry it, and then make the most wonderful grease burger I have ever had.

Cleverly named the "Murphyburger".

There's a Murphy's next to Ron's Pub on Fountainview in Houston.  Pretty good stuff.  Their "Murphyburger", IIRC, is smothered in grilled onions and barbecue sauce, amongst other things.  Good fries too.

I heartily second Larry's. I guess I'm a bit off as last year when I was living in Beaumont I took several trips down to Port Arthur. It is an interesting town in the train wreck sort of meaning of "interesting." I could not pry myself away at times.

Plus, the Port Arthur Mardi Gras was actually one hell of a good time.

Was hyped up by some buddies and went with them to Burger Tex, and wasn't impressed at all.  Wasn't bad, but just kind of went down like anyother burger.

Just to clarify, the place is called Cliff's.  the burger is the Murphy burger.  Ron's is an institution.  What has become of it since the smoking ban?  Used to be like a safe haven for the lungly-ambivalent.

Casino is awesome. Sadly, I work across the street from it, but haven't been there in years. I need to drag the missus out for a "remember when we had no responsibilities?" date night.

Mike's Pub

No thanks ... All grease and suits trying to look cool by slumming it.  The burger is average at best and the fries are lousy.

Right.  It's a sinkhole, the schools are horrific, the downtown looks like any Rust Belt city c. 1975.  There is a tremendous economic boom going on all around the area, but some how P.A. will mostly miss the boat.  They have and have had a terrific man-made resource in Pleasure Island, but they've mostly fucked that up, too.

Still, the place has its decadent charms, as you have hinted at.

Unfortunately...or maybe fortunately...the Murphy's I am talking about probably isn't more tham a little hamburger stand. Anyone headed to Surfside, however, should risk their lives and split one of these with their significant other, though.

And then risk your life by heading over to Castaway's to wash the burger down with mass amounts of Jack Daniels. Everytime I've been to that place a fight has broken out.

Ah, beautiful Surfside. If you've never been to the St. Patrick's Day Parade/Drunken Civil War Re-enactment, you haven't truly experienced Texan Gulf Coast Haute Culture.

I'm wondering what would possess a person to go to Larry's French Market and eat a cheeseburger.  I've been there a couple of times and they had a great seafood buffet.  I even recall them having decent gumbo and I'm pretty skeptical about restaurant gumbo.

As for the comments about my hometown of Port Arthur, they make me sad, but it would be hard to disagree.  It's a real shame because when I was growing up there Port Arthur was a great, prosperous town.  These days it really bears little resemblance to the town I remember, except for the refineries.

Port Arthur will always hold something of a special place in my heart, if only because my grandmother lived in Groves and we always looked forward to going there when we were younger.  Having grown up now, though, it's pretty easy to see that the whole area is pretty dumpy.

However, we do take pride in the fact that we were thrown out of Mazzio's Pizza.

Another good burger at the unlikeliest place is Nau's Enfield Drug (1115 W. Lynn St). It's good and cheap -- two-thirds of the triple crown (large portion is the other).

Whenever we head on over to Ninfa's at 35 and 183, we see the deserted Burger Tex, always wondering how they afford to stay open.   I need to go there.
