In the off-season between 1994 and 1995, the Astros traded Bagwell's teammates Ken Caminiti and Steve Finley to the San Diego Padres for Derek Bell and Phil Plantier, amongst others. Bagwell never took to Bell and Plantier, and despite desperate pleas from each of them for Jeff to help them with their own hitting troubles, Bagwell refused to help his new teammates and they never regained their strokes.
