Qualls suspended 3 games, fined
« on: June 20, 2007, 06:47:03 pm »
Quote
Chad Qualls was given a three-game suspension and fined today for throwing a ball into the stands at Angel Stadium in frustration Monday night.

He was set to start serving the suspension tonight, but he has appealed and will be available to pitch.

That is fucking absurd. He didn't throw it at anyone, He threw it up.

Fine the shit out of him, I can understand that...

But you're telling me that his throwing that ball in stands was worse than Twinkie charging out on the field after being ejected? AND was only 2 games less than an actual fistfight on the field?

THREE.  FUCKING.  GAMES?

That ball kill Watson's mom?

That puts it on par with Sheffield allegedely throwing the bat handle at an umpire. And Josh Bard with making contact with an umpire. And very close to Piniella 'kicking' the ump.
Oye. Vamos, vamos.

After The Strike, as a way to connect with the fans again, didn't MLB encourage players to throw the ball into the crowd at the end of the inning?

Yeah, but the upper deck crowd wasn't included. Did the ball plunk some spaced out Disney zombie? That might explain it.

isn't it longer because he's a relief pitcher who doesn't play every day?  3 games to him is like 2 for a position player, or even one if the games he misses are not close in the 7th (or 8th now I guess).

That's nuts. Players toss the ball into the crowd routinely at the end of every inning.

players toss the ball into the crowd routinely, not blindly heave it during moments of extreme frustration.

Totally deserving IMO.

The difference between fights on the field and this is the fans.  You can't have players harming fans.

Prolly goes to intent.  Indiscriminately heaving a ball into the stands through a red mist is not a safe thing to do.  I do think three games is excessive, this one probably deserved to be more weighted on the fine side of the equation so as to penalise the player more than the team, but it's not an insignificant action by Qualls from a fan-safety point of view.

No one but that's not the point.

They are afraid of someone being injured and rightfully so.  Suspend players harshly and it won't happen.  MLB, NFL, and the NBA don't want another Detroit incident.  I think it's smart.

Imagine if some 6'4", 250 lb pitcher threw a ball in the stands during a tirade that hit a little kid.

Maybe a game too much, but it was a dumbass thing to do and warranted a suspension.   People aren't ready for a baseball to come humming their way when the inning is over unless the player is tossing it to people right in front of them.    Heaving the ball as hard as you can deep into the stands isn't an OK  way to take out your frustration.    Nobody ever does it, and MLB doesn't want pissy relievers to make a habit of it.
