Hotels in downtown Houston
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:45:46 am »
The old lady and I are making our annual pilgrimage to Minute Maid the first week of July, and decided to make a week of it.  Thinking about staying downtown... any recommendations for hotels?  Any way to get around valet fees?  I read online that you can park in the Toyota Center garage for free.  Shuttle to and from games is a plus.

We've looked at the Hilton, Hyatt, and the Doubletree.  Inn at the Ballpark is a little out of our price range.

when we go, we stay at a Hilton in the hospital/medical center area and ride the light rail to the ballpark and other destinations. the car does not leave the garage all weekend.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

The Magnolia is nice and only a few blocks away.  They don't have a public lot, though, so you'd either have to park elsewhere or valet.  Every time we've stayed there I've called and asked if there were any special rates available, and we've only paid above $99 once (playoff weekend.)

Hilton Americas. Nice Hotel and at one point, they were offering ~$60 rooms on weekends because they are so undersold.

We do this, too.  It's the Hilton that's essentially at Main and University, although the entrance is really on Travis.

This also means that you can walk to the Village outside of game time to find some good eatin' and drinkin'.  Just on Morningside alone you can have one drink in each bar and never make it a block before falling over.

Actually, if you don't mind sleeping in the leaf piles in the alleys of Southampton, you can live your whole life on Morningside.

There have been mornings when I've felt like I done exactly that.  Just ask gleach about the only time he's been threatened with being cut off in a bar.
