Limey...need some help (english premier league related)
« on: April 26, 2007, 04:25:48 pm »
My 5 year old daughter is starting soccer and we've been watching a bit of it together on tv.  I try to steer away from the MSL and the Dynamos.  Anyway, we get the Fox Soccer Channel on tv and so we get games from the various leagues (italy, argentina, england) and I think we're going to settle in on the English Premier League as our league of choice.

We're trying to decide who to root for.  Right now we're leaning to either Liverpool (cuz she like the Beatles) or Chelsea (cuz her best friend at school is named Chelsea).  Either of these teams full of assholes/thugs/lowlifes?  What are your thoughts on these teams.
You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you. Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here, close. You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?

Not a limey, nor Limey.

Plenty of thugs and ne'erdowells on both squads. Personally, I'm a Liverpool fan thanks to some family friends from there.

Speaking of thugs, this should amuse anyone who is a fan of team sports: http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2016248,00.html

And Chelsea is an abomination, but I'll let Limey handle that one.

Most premiership players are of the asshole/thug/lowlife variety.  I think I'm safe in saying that there's never been a skilled neurosurgeon who's given it all up to play footy!  If the choice is Chelsea and anyone else, go with "anyone else".  Chelsea are owned by a Russian oligarch who buys the most expensive players regardless of need and then bitches when they don't win (see Captain, Yacht); their coach is a complete whiny bitch; and their players are detestable whores.

Liverpool aren't much better, but they're better.  They used to fit the above profile, but now don't because Chelsea have sprinted past them.  However, they are now owned by a consortium lead by Tom Hicks (yes, that Tom Hicks) so that may be a hard pill to swallow.

My allegiances lie with Crystal Palace, who suck, so I understand their lack of international appeal.  I do have a soft spot for Tottenham Hotspurs, however, because they play decent football and are a fine, historic club.  Unfortunately, they have no money so they are doomed to be 2nd tier premiership until some American sugar daddy buys them.  They are the sworn enemy of Arsenal, which is nice...

Reluctantly, I must admit that Moan Utd have the most attractive team in European soccer, both sportingly and physically (NTTAWWT).  I would normally poo-poo support for a rich club, but currently they are a joy to watch.  Christiano Ronaldo is one of the most gifted players ever to play the game.  He's also a horrible cheat.  Obviously, I hate him.

You can always go with Arsenal and have a rousing time.  But I'd go with Nottingham Forest and dress like Robin Hood (green tights and all) every match you watch.  Have fun!

Man U?  Isn't that the equivalent of rooting for the Yankees, the Dallas Cowboys, Notre Dame football, Duke basketball all rolled into one?  Plus didn't Beckham play for those faggots?

Which of the good clubs is the least shitty?

Not Limey but my two cents...the English Premier league is the best soccer league in the world at the moment even if it is a bit top heavy...Teams like Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, and Arsenal are usually very strong teams because of their financial resources...I cheer for Man Utd in the English league because my wife is from Manchester and I have been to Old Trafford...Chelsea, I dislike the most because of their NYY type financial situation against the rest of the league...So I would vote for Liverpool because they have a couple of first class players in Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso...  The Beatles are a good reason too...

Francenal are a terrible choice.  If being staffed by cheese-eating surrender monkeys wasn't enough, they're sponsored by the UAE, who's last major financial commitment was to offer a safe haven to Allahburton.

Wear green tights as much as you like, but Notts Forest are never going to be on FSC.  They used to be a fabulous club, when run by the God-like (and that's meant respectfully) Brian Clough.  they aren't big enough to sustain themselves without such genius at the helm, and are slipping slowly but surely into non-league oblivion.

They used to be a fabulous club, when run by the God-like (and that's meant respectfully) Brian Clough.  they aren't big enough to sustain themselves without such genius at the helm...

To save linking, here's some of the quotes from the enormous brain and ego of Brian Clough.  I can attest to the accuracy of most of them...

"I certainly wouldn't say I'm the best manager in the business, but I'm in the top one."

"Get in there - that's what I pay you for!" - to Derby County players at a training session.

"As far as I'm concerned you can throw all those medals you've won in the bin, because you won them all by cheating" - to the Leeds United players on his first day as manager.

" This is a terrible day.....for Leeds United" - exiting Elland Road after being sacked after 44 days as manager.

"If a chairman sacks a manager that he initially appointed, then he should go as well."

"John Robertson was a very unattractive young man. If, one day, I was feeling a bit off colour, I would sit next to him. I was bloody Errol Flynn compared to him."

"If God had intended for us to play football in the clouds he wouldn't have put grass on the ground." - referring to the long ball game.

"If a player had said to Bill Shankly 'I've got to speak to my agent', Bill would have hit him. And I would have held him while he hit him."

"It was like a morgue in the dressing room after the game, and it's still like a morgue now. If that's what defeat feels like, we don't want to go through it again - oh, it's rotten" - interview with ITV after defeat for Forest in the 1980 League Cup final.

"Derby County were here a long time before Robert Maxwell" - on agreeing with a protest by Derby fans against Maxwell's ownership of the club.

"They thought I was going to change it lock, stock and barrel. They were shrewd because that's exactly what I would have done" - on why he was rejected by the FA for the England job.

"I'd ask him how he thinks it should be done, have a chat about it for twenty minutes and then decide I was right" - on dealing with players disagreeing with his methods.

"I like my women to be feminine and not rolling around in mud" on what he thought of women's football.

"Don't send me flowers when I'm dead, send them to me now if you like me."

"I want no epitaphs of profound history or all that kind of thing. I contributed, I hope they would say that and I hope that somebody liked me."

"For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls." - on Sir Alex Ferguson's failure to match his record of two European Cup wins.

"Who thought Derby County could be turned into League champions; that any manager could bounce back from getting the bullet after 44 days with a great club and go on to prove himself among the best managers of all time; that what was done at Derby could be repeated at Forest; that after winning one European Cup, we could retain it; that a brash, self-opinionated young footballer, cut down by injury in his prime, would go on to achieve more impressive fame as a brash, highly successful manager?"

"It only takes a second to score a goal."
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

Just "Spurs"

When you watch their games, keep an ear out for this famous song:

"Well it's a grand old team to play for
It's a grand all team to see
And if..you know..your history
It's enough to make you heart go whoo-oo-OO-OO
We don't care what the other teams say
What the hell do we care?
For we only know that there's gonna be a show
And the Tottenham Hotspur will be there"

Forhorn, if you are truly going to get into the EPL (and, really, even if you aren't) I recommend trying to track down a three volume set (or, in limeyspeak, an omnibus) of novels by John King - The Football Factory, Headhuners and England Away.

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/printed-books/football-factory-headhunters-england-away-john-king/

In my view it would be well worth seeking out. There are sections of each book that I suspect you would like a great deal. The opening lines from The Football Factory, quoted from memory:

"Coventry are fuck all. They've got a shit team and shit support. Hitler had the right idea when he tried to level the place."

It might be time for me to revisit these three myself. Let's be clear - it's not Dostoevsky, but despite some clunky violence the writing's pretty damn good and the characters pretty well realized. Limey probably already knows this, but in the books the main group is from far west London, Wernham Hogg territory, and unfortunately the fellows are strong Chelsea supporters. Charming lads they are - they refer to a trip up to White Hart Lane to watch their side take on your side in a derby as a "Saturday out battering yids." As I said, some clunky violence.

Anyway, enthusiastically recommended by good old chuck.

Haven't read those, so I'll add that to my Amazon shopping basket!

Another reading recommendation is Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch (the book that spawned a poor, pre-Bridget Jones Colin Firth movie, and an even worse post-SNL Jimmy Falon movie.

"I fell in love with football as I was later to fall in love with women:  suddenly, inexplicably, uncritically, giving no thought to the pain or disruption it would bring with it."

[For added TZ cred., Hornby's book "High Fidelity" was made into a movie starring John Cusack.]

Speaking of Hornby....I recently finished A Long Way Down.  Good read.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I hope you do. I thought about enticing Foggy with an explanation of this contest laid out in one of the books that assigns points to various types of exploits, many sexual, culminating in, well, now I remember why I didn't spell it out initially.

I like Nick Hornby a lot, also. He's pretty tame, though, sort of yin to King's yang, or vice versa. The book Fever Pitch is 10000000 better than any fucking movie. About a Boy was pretty good, too. And I loved the line in High Fidelity about why that American singer had moved to the UK - she'd found a better audience in the UK because in the US audiences were hostile whereas in the UK they were "cheerfully indifferent."

As much as I love vulgarity and general boorish behavior, I'm primarily doing this to hang with my daughter.  She seems to like soccer more than the dance/gym classes she's been in and I thought it would be more fun to watch the EPL than the shit we get here in America.

Not sure she's ready to learn some of the chants/songs quite yet.  She does do  mean version of "Here come the Astros".

Thanks for the book recommendations.  I'll try to check those out.

Great Clough quotes Limey, much appreciated.  As an American fan of the EPL, I was first turned on to the brilliance of the league by one Eric Cantona in the mid to late 1990's when United games were pretty much all you could get on the local Austin cable provider.  I've been an unappologetic fan, sorry to say, ever since (Agreed, Ronaldo is brilliant).  I think it's wonderfull, the amount of coverage given to the league currently and really love to watch just about anything The Fox Soccer Channel has to offer.  That's the great thing about being an American soccer fan, we have ZERO history and can root for ANYone.  My Euro friends can't quite understand this, but I understand them and it's cool.

Anyway, looking forward to celebrating a second treble very soon bra and hope Palace get back to the top flight soon.  Cheers.

Ha ha!

I think it's a little bit unfortunate that MLS is so easily and categorically dismissed. Certainly the quality of play isn't as good as in the EPL, but there are some excellent players, and many of them reside in Houston. The league, I think, suffers from poor marketing (which before this year seemed to me to consist of "..." and now consists of "...Beckham!"), because people like Foghorn and his daughter are a pretty good example of who they're trying to reach outside the core of American soccer fans.

I don't mind the MSL, and I'm glad the Dynamos are here in town, but they don't serve any purpose to me.  If I am going to watch a game on tv, I'd just as soon watch an EPL game rather than MSL because the level of play is infinitely better.  And it shows.

If I want to take my dughter to game here in town, I take her to one of the grils high school games.  I went to Klein Oak and my wife went to Klein, and each field a good girls team year in year out.  I'd rather take her to one of those games rather than a Dynamos game.

Fox Soccer Channel showing all the EPL games is going to put a nail in the MSL coffin.  Its too easy to be a fan of the EPL rather than the MLS.

Start her off slowly, with something gentle like this:

He's an Arsenal bastard

By the way, after talking with my daughter last night, a new team has entered the fray...Man U.  She asked which team was the best, I told her Man U, and she asked why we don't just cheer for them if they are the best and the most fun to watch.

I didn't really have a good answer other than it would be akin to cheering for the Yankees.

If just saying this didn't explain it to her very clearly then you've got a lot of work to do catching up.

I know but, if you had zero allegiance to a MLB team, and just wanted to watch a team that plays good baseball, over the past X years its harder to find a more appropriate team than the Yankees.

For instance, right now if I had zero allegiance to an NBA team, I'd be a Pheonix Suns fan because they are a joy to watch.  They play a brand of basketball that is exciting and fun.

The Rams in the "greatest show on turf" era were also like this.  Just a fun, fun team to watch and cheer for.  The Colts to a lesser extent.

I don't think there is another team in the EPL that is anywhere close to Man U in terms of goal scoring.  There's not a whole lot of "on-the-field" reasons to dislike them, from what I can tell (which isn't much).  They seem to be loaded with "off-the-field" stuff however.

Start her off slowly, with something gentle like this:

Ian Wright is illegitimate
He aint got no birth certificate
He's got AIDS and can't get rid of it
He's an Arsenal bastard
Judas, Judas, Judas!

See more here.

I liked the song you posted once that the English sing to the Aussies in the WC--the "penal colony" ditty.  Brutal.

Maybe I missed it, or maybe he doesn't play there anymore, but what about Blackburn Rovers.  Their keeper is Brad Friedel, of good honest Amurcan stock.
My heart bleeds for your fantasy team.

If you want to go American, Fulham has a fair amount including East Texas native Clint Dempsey.

To the tune of "Yellow Submarine"...all together now...

You all live in a penal colony,
A penal colony,
A penal colony...

Also, the British national anthem is amended when the Aussies are present.  As much as they detest their "motherland", they still voted to stay part of the Commonwealth and have the Queen as their monarch.  Hence, the slight change that goes...

God save YOUR gracious Queen
Long live YOUR noble Queen
God save YOUR Queen
(You're a convict)
Send Her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over YOU
God save YOUR Queen

Trust me, they love it!

...and Brian McBride, who is a throw-back, archetypal British centre forward if ever there was one.

Plus, it's owned by Mohamed Al Fayed, who owns Harrods and is convinced that the Royal family murdered his son.  Which is like "The Tudors" but modern.

Yeah, there is no doubt we're going to be an EPL family and not an MSL one.

PG it isn't, but the humour that swirls around the terraces during a game is priceless.  And, much like the GZ, the worse the team's performance, the more biting the funnies.

This is why Chelsea fans, as the latest, greatest example, get such shit.  They're bandwagoners, so there's no shared misery from which to generate any camaraderie.  They're just pissed off when their team loses because that's not what their company shelled out all that money on season tickets for.
