The catching foursome at the Bagwell camp
« on: January 31, 2007, 11:58:39 am »
in case you missed the  Chron article:

Garner on Sapp:

"I liked his swing right from the get-go, and I still like his swing," Garner said. "As you would expect, he was a kid who had some baby fat and was a little pudgy, but I patted him on the shoulder the other day, and clearly this kid is starting to firm up. It will be nice to watch him evolve."

Santangelo on...Santangelo:

"I'm going to hit here and there like any other catcher would, and I throw well, but I definitely have to hone my blocking (pitches)."

McTaggart does report that Santangelo will be a NRI to the major league camp.

I guess to give all the pitchers plenty of work during the first two weeks of camp.

That was pretty much my reaction as well.

Edited to add:

Actually a related thought here was the status of Gimenez's throwing arm. As I noted in one of the  winter league updates, he missed nearly two months of the VWL season due to an injury and when he finally came back he was restricted to DH/PH duties. If the current feeling is that his arm still may not be ready to go by the start of ST, then that further increases the need for another body in the major league camp. And it possibly reduces the backup catcher competition from a three-man to a two-man race (Quintero vs. Munson).

Nice.  That is a very good observation for the NRI as well!
