Philadelphia,
Carlos Lee, who league sources indicated was nearing a deal with the Astros, remained an option (for the Phillies)- perhaps a better option that Soriano, even - but he had not been a main target of the Phillies despite his consistency over the past 4 years.
That might have changed over the past week.
"He's a player of interest, certainly," Gillick allowed.
Gillick recently indicated that, if their first three options evaporate - and they appear to have done so - the Phillies would seek a second-tier free agent.

Baltimore
The Orioles and Houston Astros have been rumored as the leaders for Lee, but more teams should enter that mix now

Among the teams interested in Lee: the Baltimore Orioles, who were turned off by Soriano's price. But speculation among major league executives last night was that Lee might command as much as $95 million. An Orioles executive said the club was "not sure" it would be interested if the bidding went that high.

The Giants, along with many of the losers in the Soriano hunt, are expected to focus on Carlos Lee, considered the best remaining hitter on the market. His value should skyrocket after the Soriano deal. Lee, who finished 2006 with the Rangers, reportedly wants to play in the National League.

Los Angeles,
industry sources said slugging left fielder Carlos Lee is seeking a six-year, $100-million deal. Like Soriano, Lee doesn't want to play for a team on the West Coast.

Dang, I can remember when a 4/60 deal for Lee seemed outrageous. It seems like it us was just yesterday.

Actually, I think it was just yesterday.  If he's really seeking 6 yrs 100mil, I hope the Astros wish him the best of luck and offer to call a cab for him.  He may be the best FA option but he's not the ONLY option.

As much as I would like to see Houston add some big bats, I wouldn't blame 'em a bit for passing on the money Soriano got and what Lee is rumored to bring.

Time to swap, Tim.

Right.  I don't have any interest in trying to tailor an Astros uniform to fit Lee six years from now.  The Astros should try and shore up the rotation and maybe land a decent bat via trade.  I don't want to see Lane in the outfield for the astros next year, but pitching is what wins.

If I am offering anyone a 6 year 100 Mil contact, it is Schmidt or Zito (although I am not sure I would offer either player that deal).

I think offering 4 years and 60 Mil would be the MAX I would even consider, and at $15 Mil per, I am not sure I would even do THAT deal for Lee.

But don't exceed 4 years would be the primary I would be looking at.

Lee is a DH waiting to happen. In a couple of years, having him in any outfield will be an adventure.  The Stros need to focus on pitching and defense, with some clutch hitting.

They did get close with Oswalt.

5 years/$73M (2007-11), plus $16M 2012 club option

Lee did hit .331 with RISP last season. That's somewhat clutch, right?

I agree. The Astros should target Willie Bloomquist, who led the majors in batting average in close-and-late situations among players with at least 50 plate appearances.

Have the Astros even entertained the thought of going after Schmidt?

I don't want to play fantasy GM, but a guy that can give you 200+ innings with an ERA ~3.50 makes me forget all about Carlos Lee. What would Schmidt command? 3/$40? I'm assuming he'll want a raise from the $10.5M he made in 06.

Didn't mean to imply otherwise.  I think it was 5 years or Roy was going to be gone.

Yup. Plus, he's a little different animal than Doug Drabek or Greg Swindell.

Drayton has a long history of being more generous to someone who does something in an Astros Uni first, than those who try to earn it after wearing someone elses.

But that doesn't mean he won't go after FAs (see Pettitte and Clemens).

ETA: BTW, I agree offering 6 year deals to pitchers is not good.  I was just showing that I value getting a Zito or Schmidt more than a Lee.
