Why would the A's want Burke?
« on: March 12, 2006, 08:56:51 pm »
"With or without Roger Clemens, the Astros could take a run at A's left-hander Barry Zito if he becomes available this summer. A's G.M. Billy Beane has always liked infielder/outfielder Chris Burke, "
 The Link
Much as I'd like the idea of getting Zito, I fail to see a match- the A's have a crowded OF and Ellis and Crosby set in the middle IF. Ellis hit .340 or something in the 2nd half, IIRC. Thoughts?

While I'm on the subject, anybody have any word on how Burke's looked at SS so far?

Many would argue that Ellis peaked last year.  He was 28 and it was clearly the best year he's ever had.  Burke is 3 years younger, quite a bit further away from arby and has a bunch more upside than Ellis.
The test of a true champion is how he reacts to adversity on days when it is bound to come.

I'd like him a lot better at SS in an A's uniform than in an Astro's one.

Beane's interest in Burke has been overstated.  In addition, you'd think he's learned his lesson about stalking players after Erubiel Durazo.

That's 'Eurebiel Durazo, The Holy Grail' to you, brother.  Get it right.

I have been patiently waiting for someone to point out that Beane would naturally want to deal with the Astros, having already fleeced 'em outta Kirk Saarloos and all.  But I guess I'll have to be the one to do it.

Sorta like a fireman setting a fire, just to have something to put out.  I'm bored, and flipping matches.

Ol' Dixie Cup Durazo?  Noted.  I'm seeing Saarloos was penciled in as a reliever but is now pushing for starter.  Beane was so impressed with Saarloos that he came back for Dotel.
