Wade Miller Rumor
« on: January 13, 2006, 03:31:47 pm »
Keep in mind this is from ESPN but they are reporting a rumor that Wade Miller will likely sign a contract soon.  Houston is reported as one of several teams showing interest.  He is expected to get a major league contract which is loaded with incentives.  The obvious reason being that he's a) coming off surgery and b) won't be ready for full time work until May.

Either way, call me sentimental, but Miller return would be nice.  Especially if he can return to form, or near enough to make a nice #3/#4 starter.

Did he finally have surgery?  It's about time.  I kept laughing at all the so called experts that said he would be the steal of the '05 offseason by the Red Sox.  History has shown time and time again that arms don't just heal on their own without surgery.  See Kerry Wood, the Jackal, etc.  If he is finally healthy, then he's definitely worth a shot.

Only if he's willing to overhaul his mechanics.

Good point.  The more I think about it though...How would Miller fit in with us.  He guess-timated return would be sometime in May.  With Roger due back in early June (and yes I think he's going to re-up with us) then that means you've got no spot open for Zeke or Wandy....or the various other prospects in Nieve or Hirsh at AAA.  We're going to have to start grooming a replacement for Roger and possibly Andy for '07.

The rumor central entry states he did have surgery.  It also lists the D'Rays as one of the interested teams.  Agreed he'd crowd the pitching staff.  Is that a bad situation to have?  At times Wandy and Zeke were in over their heads.  Will that change?  I don't know any better than you.  I'm not willing to lay a wager on Clemens returning.  It seems awfully melo-dramatic, which seems to fit the description of many as it pertains to Rajah!  I simply found it an interesting rumor.  I always like Whitey.  Despite his awkward mechanics, I thought he had a good head for pitching.  Alot of his future success hinges on him offering some evidence that he can make adjustments to his mechanics and still remain effective.

If Miller were able to contribute this season then it would make little sense not to start him just to ensure that other pitchers get groomed for future seasons.

last season, at least at the beginning of the season, he was willing to "tinker"

To take pressure off Miller's shoulder, Red Sox pitching coach Dave Wallace has tried to smooth Miller's delivery so that he directs to the plate and isn't so pronounced throwing across his body. "It's worked well," Miller said. "There's less stress, my slider and curveball are fine & the one thing that's different is that I don't have as much movement down in the zone. So I have to try to pitch more like Curt Schilling, commanding both sides of the plate down on the corners."

"Just a little tinkering here and there that will stop me from having the ball come across my body," Miller said. "I don't think I'll be throwing as hard as I was when I was 100 percent a few years ago."
