Rocket's made up his mind
« on: October 31, 2005, 10:04:30 am »
740 played a little audio clip while I was getting ready this morning. Clemens said something along the lines of he knows what he's going to do, he just won't announce it for a little while... this team has what it takes to move forward, yadda.

I did a cursory search on the Chronicle's website (geez, why even bother) and didn't find anything yet. Not sure why he'd take his time letting his decision be known.

Thoughts?

He knows what he's going to do...and that is...not make a decision until he sees how much money Drayton offers him.

The hope here is that ambiguity leads to more cayshe.

Given that Purpura has stated publicly that it would help the team to have his decision expressed "sooner than later" this can be the only possible explanation to his holding another beltran situation over the team.

And tons of people here in Houston love it.

I'll be very surprised if he returns next year. He was beaten up physically by the end of the season, and he just hasn't sounded like a man who will continue playing. I know many people had the same impression the last 2 off-season (not me, by the way), but this just seems different. In any case, I'll be doubly surprised if he doesn't make the announcement well before the winter meetings, especially if he's already made up his mind. Last year's delay was in large part due to waiting for Beltran. There shouldn't be any such delay this time.

This makes me think he's coming back.  If he wasn't, he'd just come out and say it, but it takes time to work out the details of another deal and he's going to keep quiet until it's done.  He and the Astros will announce the deal before the winter meetings.

is it still a secret in just his mind or has he shared it with the astros management? i had the honor and thrill of seeing clemens pitch..which like many other fans would have never happened if he hadnt come to houston. no matter which way he leans its been good for the team good for houston and beyond excellent for the wallet of the one and only owner of the team

An interesting comment is made over on SI.com:

Quote:

As reported here last week, Clemens has committed to pitch in the World Baseball Classic, which puts him in pitching shape in March, which makes another season likely (especially with his son, Kobe, expected to get a spring invitation from the Astros). Clemens made $18 million last season, the most money ever for a pitcher, and he certainly doesn't deserve a pay cut after a 1.87 ERA.

The Rocket and his ego will return, my gut feeling based on he did not have a 'farewell' tour yet. Except for his last year with the Yanks,  I mean.

(do they still make vw vans) ... any how i tend to agree with you for what it is worth// he is making a lot of green, has his son in the orginazation, can come and go as he pleases, dont forget the heb commercials(i know he does others but these tend to stand out in my mind) , and sounds like the life anyone would like to lead much less a mlb player on his way to the hall of fame

I propose that from this day forward, Clemens be known as "The Rockt."
