Stupid Question from Newbie..
« on: October 19, 2005, 01:35:05 pm »
Long Time Astros fan but I just found this site, I love it. I have a question though, I keep reading about the Cardinals referred to as 'The Jakes'. Can someone tell me- What does this mean/what is the origin?

Jakes: 1)The St. Louis Cardinals. 2)On April 6, 2003 a game in St. Louis was called by the Cardinals, on account of injuries, being down 0-2 in the series, and Roy Oswalt scheduled to pitch. Although the official excuse was weather, it was never a factor for the game, which was called nearly 12 hours ahead of time. 3) See also Co-ards, 3rdinals.

further detail,

The Cardinals suffered their first rainout in almost two years
Sunday when a raw morning drizzle and a poor forecast led them to
reschedule their series finale against Houston for May 29.

The club made its decision almost two hours before the game's
1:10 p.m. scheduled start. Temperatures hovered below 40 degrees at
the time with the wind gusting at more than 20 miles per hour.

Sunday's postponement gave the Astros a sweep of the two- game
series while allowing the Cardinals to recover from a recent series
of nagging injuries.

Albert Pujols a hamstring
Jim Edmonds, a calf strain.
Eli Marrero's severely
bruised right thigh, Mike Matheny was to catch his sixth consecutive
game.

La Russa played down the degree his team's bruised condition
played in the decision, saying, "It's never good to get cute" about
manipulating a schedule.

allows La Russa to bump Jason Simontacchi to Tuesday with Garrett
Stephenson and Brett Tomko to follow. Matt Morris is on turn to
pitch Friday in Houston. Williams would work Saturday's game.

Thanks guys, esp you ALKIE, it all makes sense now. My favorite is "BFiB". For the past two days I've been reading the STLPOST forum "CARDSTALK" and posting derogatory comments under "BUDWEISERSUX".

The crap coming out of their pieholes is absurd.Get a load of this shit if you get a chance (they weed out cussing unfortunately. Apparently they think "ASSTROS" is the funniest fucking thing ever.

The dictionary should be changed to include the proper usage of Jakes. It should only ever be 'Fuck the Jakes' or 'Fucking Jakes'.

Correct.  Non-insulting references to them should always be "3rds", as this is almost a compliment based on the fact that they were totally overlooked in 2002(?) by the mediots, who predicted an Astros-Cubs dead-heat oin the Central.  Mild insults should mostly be "Co-ards".
