Palmeiro or Lamb
« on: October 12, 2005, 11:00:03 am »
Has Garner showed his hand on this yet?  I was sure Lamb would start Games 1 & 2 of the NLDS but didn't get the nod until G3.  Scraps always seems to throw a wrinkle into every game so I'm sure there will be some suprises. Lambs numbers vs Carpenter make sense for the start (Series preview: 6-for-18 (.333) with 4 doubles and a homer), but OP's solid plate performances and improved defensive skills would also be a plus in a game that, on paper anyway, looks to be a low scoring affair.

Six of one, half dozen of the other. I'm guessing Garner goes with Palmeiro for the D and AVG. and then goes with Lamb for some Minute Maid mashing.

OP got the Game #1 start because of his numbers against Hudson.  Dunno about #2.

FWIW, I like the line-up with Lamb hitting 5th, especially against La Russa as the lefty-righty-lefty thing will have him itching to get out there and brainfuck this thing.  Remember Ray King last year?  He's still there...

Out of curiosity, how many of the co-ards starters were there when OP played with them?  just morris and carpenter?

out of the pen: eldred, king, tavarez, and izzy?

I like when a hitter has played a lot with a pitcher and has seen how he works hitters first hand, ala biggio v. wagner this year

My guess on Garner's Game 2 choice was that he didn't want Berkman skating around on that damp left field grass in Atlanta.

But, Palmeiro didn't start against Hudson in Game 4, which leads me to believe Garner likes Lamb at home regardless.  I forgot about OP being a former Card, which might make him a little more comfortable in the Busch outfield.

Yeah, he was and I read a book "three nights in august" by Buzz Bissinger (friday night lights).  Basically, he applies a nice lubricant and strokes La Genius's cock for around 245 pages, but Bissinger mentions that OP was one of the cardinal's most valuable player assets in terms of watching opposing pitchers and deciphering their approach.  OP rarely gets cheated in an at bat which seems to add credence to this statement.  I have felt much more confident with Garner's use of him as a go-to pinch hitter since then

Also, after watching Berkman cover the phone booth in MMP, imagine how he would handle more space in the outfield right now. Might not be what Phil was thinking, but it would make sense to me.

I like the follow-up book about the Braves' playoff experiences.  It's called "Three Nights in October".

Gotta think Lamb- he's 6/18 with 5 of them being extra base hits against carpenter, while I believe O is 3-19 or some such.

O is a hitting like 700 against suppan in 21 at bats so I would bet on him starting in game 4.
Just guesses though- never know with Gar

Well, for what it's worth, Lamb started at first against Carpenter when we touched him up for five runs and six innings in September.

You can always count on a quality at bat from Palmeiro.  He'll see a lot of pitches, and has come through for us.  But I think he should be kept as an option for PH or late inning defensive sub.  Lamb has been on fire the last few games and might get something started for us against Termite.  I believe Gar will give Mike the start.

My guess is this:

Carpenter: Lamb
Mulder: Burke
Morris: Lamb
Suppan: Palmeiro

Yeah, I too think Burke might get a start during the series, and Game 2 might be the one.
