For those wondering when players will get promoted...

?At midseason we will sit down and evaluate the talent (in the minors) and promote those we are certain are prepared for the next level,? said General Manager Tim Purpura. ?We take it slow in this organization and make sure each player has mastered the level he is at before moving them upward.?

What is the significance of a draftee signing a minor league contract vs. signing a major league contract?

The significance of signing a major league contract is the player is immediately added to the team's 40-man roster and his 3 option years begin.

Chance Douglass has been on a scoreless inning run.  Probably won't pitch for High A Salem until Wilmington, but in his last 2 starts he has 14.2 IP 10 Hits and 3 walks with 12Ks, but 0 Runs.

Supposedly he made an adjustment to his delivery after getting blasted in the outing right before this streak starter (gave up 7 runs in 2 IP or something like that).

From Baseball America Monday Dish report.

Quote:

Between Troy Patton, Hunter Pence and now Jimmy Barthmaier, it is an embarrassment of riches at low Class A Lexington. While Patton is working on a 31-innning scoreless streak, Barthmaier threw six shutout innings yesterday to extend his personal scoreless streak to 19 innings while lowering his ERA to 1.77. In the process, he fanned eight and allowed just three baserunners.

Pence goes down

"The Legends lost more than a game. Hunter Pence suffered a strained quadriceps in the first inning. Pence was placed on the disabled along with Beau Torbert (sore Achilles) after the game. Outfielder Luke Barganier and infielder Drew Sutton will join the Legends active roster. Barganier will come to Lexington from extended spring training. Last season Barganier hit .230 for Tri-City. Sutton comes to Lexington via Salem. Sutton hit .237 in 38 games for the Avalanche."

Pence did it running out a ground ball in the bottom of the first inning.

Patton Piece in Lex Paper
« Reply #8 on: June 14, 2005, 07:51:39 am »
There is a feature on Troy Patton in todays Lex Paper.

The Link

Some Highlights:

"I just try to not let them score any runs at all every time I pitch," he says. "I didn't think I could do this. I think a lot of it's luck, and a lot of it's really good defense behind me." ....

Tom Wiedenbauer, minor-league field coordinator for the Astros, says moves are based on "roster management" with the minor-league clubs. A promotion has to be a fit not only for the player but also for the clubs involved.

"And he's still in his first (full) season," Wiedenbauer says. "You want to be as careful as you can. You want to be sure before you make a move."

"His heart was set on turning pro. He figured he would be selected early in the second round of the 2004 draft."

Found my answer on Salem's site:

"The Salem Avalanche announced a roster change today. Infielder Drew Sutton has been optioned from Salem to Lexington in the South Atlantic League. AA Corpus Christi Infielder Pat Peavey returns to Salem to take Sutton?s roster spot."

I know alot of fans don't think he projects that well, being as old as he is and not dazzling in the way Pence does, but for my money, a guy who's BB/K ratio is that good at any level is worth looking at... The fact that he is a SS, has some speed and hits decently too, I look for him to rise with Pence (although maybe not as fast).

I hope he keeps up the same batting eye as he moves up.  I think that is one of those "you can't teach" traits.

Actually, I would think that his age means that he'll be pushed pretty hard.  Whether or not he can succeed at each level is the question.  So far, so good.

Latin Talent

Now that the draft is over I am ready for our short season to begin in Greeneville.  Atleast half of our roster will be latin players.  Any word on new talent that I should keep an eye out for?

Lexington reeling
« Reply #18 on: June 17, 2005, 12:51:14 pm »
The Legends are now in danger of losing 1st place... They are 1 game ahead of 2 teams with 3 left to play... All 3 against one of those teams breathing down their neck!  They need to pull off 2 of 3... Thankfully the last two games for the 1st half are being started by their two aces... but still... Since Pence got injured this team has been tanking.  Although in fairness it has not been all the bats faults, a couple of the game recently have been ugly for the pitchers.

The rest of the bad news is that they need help from West Va. verses Hagerstown.  WV is one of the worst teams in the league.  They helped last night, hope they can keep it up.

Injuries are killing Lex right now.  They have atleast 4 position players on the DL.

The good news is that we have Juan, Jimmy and Troy to pitch the last 3 games. With the exception of tonight's game, the pitching match up seems to favor Lexington.
