McCann to the DL
« on: May 29, 2018, 10:11:55 am »
Assume a catcher from Fresno?

Who would that be?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Have they closed the door on Gattis catching again?  I would think if McCann's trip to the DL is short, it would be perfect to have Gattis catch 2-3-4 games, especially with Stassi playing so well.

Garrett Stubbs is having a good year at the plate in Fresno.  Coming out of college, he was touted as a quality defensive catcher.  Don't know if that means he will come up or not; I assume it depends on how long McCann is out.  Short stint, Gattis, long stint, Stubbs.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the replacement will be Tim Federowicz. We picked him up this off season. Is he a lefty bat? He is doing pretty good at AAA slashing 337/407/584.

Did quick research and he is a righty bat, so our thin left handed batting corp just got thinner.

He has major league service time.  This situation is exactly why they signed him.

ETA: They could lose him when they try to send him down after McCann returns.

Precisely why we got him

Time for Stassi to show what he looks like in a full time role.

If he's not on optional assignment now, it means they have to add him to the 40-man.  Is there currently room, or does someone need to go to make it?

He was signed as a minor league free agent.

So he was not on the 40-man.  But I guess there's existing room.

Correct as noted above by jbm.  Too as he's already used his 3 option years he'll have to be removed from the 40-man and exposed to waivers to be sent down.

Probably not, but I’m still gonna try to make lemonade.

I would probably expect to see Stassi’s average dip some with everyday playing time rather than Hinch picking the ideal matchups for him to hit against. Defensively I think we will be fine. During AJ’s normal noon interview on MLB radio today, he mentioned that JD Davis was going to get more playing time in the coming days because we will see something like 7 lefties over the next 10 days. If that is the case, pretty sure Stassi was going to get the bulk of the playing time anyway over the next 10 days to 2 weeks. Good time to get McCann a break. Couple that with the all-star break in about 45 days and this hopefully will have Brian rested for the stretch run.

This organization is well run and they have a plan. It may not always work, but they have a plan.

Stassi was catching 40% of the games up to now.  That's not exactly playing in ideal matchups.  I would expect the split to continue to be somewhere around 60/40 but in favor of Stassi until McCann returns.

Tim Federowicz looked more than competent in the few games I saw him play in spring training.

You should expect his average to take a nose dive playing every day. He already strikes out 40% of the time, that number would increase drastically and his average would plummet regularly facing right handers.  Stassi has been a nice little surprise against lefties. But let’s understand what he is.
