Best World Series ever to non-Astros fans as well?
« on: November 02, 2017, 02:30:38 pm »
Wow, what a game, what a series, what a playoff run.

I'm much more of a fan of the Astros than I am in baseball in general (although I love it as well), so I wasn't really thinking about how entertaining this Series was to non-fans.

But this morning I heard the guys on MLB Network Radio talking about it: ratings were great, casual fans were transfixed. So if you're able to be objective about this and take your Astros fandom out of it ( I'm totally not), do you still think this is the greatest World Series ever?

Everything I've heard or read from neutrals is that this was one of the most entertaining world series.

It had everything, two 100 win teams, young stars, pitching duels, offensive explosions, great defensive plays, drama, a game 7, I don't know what else you could want from a series.

I think 2014, 2016, and 2017 were all entertaining as hell. 2017 has the edge in terms of competitiveness of each individual game, but each series should've been really enjoyable to outside fans. We're just in a really good stretch of memorable playoff baseball right now.

According to a metric that measures the entertainment quality of a game by its swings in win-expectancy, game 2 was the 15th "most entertaining" game in WS history, and game 5 was the 5th "most entertaining", making 2017's the first WS in nearly 100 years to feature two top 20 games.

I don't personally think it was the best in history, though. The ones we lost never felt close. Even Game 6.

I would think 1991 rates very highly, simply because Game 7 itself was also extremely tense and dramatic.

The comparatively pedestrian Game 7 last night probably keeps the 2017 series as a whole out of the top spot, but Games 2 and 5 will be long remembered.

2001 had the dramatic backdrop of a New York team playing in it just after 9/11.  While the series went 7 and Game 7 was dramatic as hell (with AZ getting two runs in the bottom of the 9th to come from behind and walk it off), the overall run differential was way lopsided with Arizona winning 3 blowouts.

1991 stands firm for me as the metric of World Series excitement. I think this one, even objectively, ranks up to ‘91.

Someone here years ago had a signature line saying he dreamed of the day the Astros would celebrate a WS victory in front of an ambivalent nation  (or something like that).

It is very gratifying that above the win,  it was a highly regarded WS.  Icing on the cake.  Cherry on top.  Gravy on the biscuits.  Sweetness.

I got a congratulatory text at about the same time Altuve started his winner's grin from a not-that-close friend in Philadelphia.  He (like me) is a lifelong baseball fan, and we have traded barbs about the various Astros/Phillies trades.  He was up watching the last pitch well after midnight and then went on and on about what a great series it was.  One of the best he can remember (at least 30 years worth).  Just one data point, but it confirms your theory.

That game 7 was such a classic, and the fact that both teams finished in last place the year before added some spice. But I'll take this years because I'm bias.

I'm completely objective, and this was the best World Series ever.

I don't personally think it was the best in history, though. The ones we lost never felt close. Even Game 6.

I'm sure Game 6 required fresh underpants throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

If you do not think 1-1 in the 9th “felt close,” I don’t know what to say.

It’s Southern California. They all go commando there.

It was the fact that we’d been one hit to that point.

and led 1-0. By “close,” I thought you meant score.
