Citizens Bank Park food options
« on: July 26, 2017, 11:57:52 am »
Hauling butt up from Dover tonight to make the game.  My dad surprised me with tickets so I will handle food.  Any places to hit or avoid?  We will be on the third base side about 17 rows back.  If anyone is making it, I'd love to say hello.  I mainly lurk but feel like y'all are my weird internet family.

It's been years since I was there, but the sort of food court that's out beyond centerfield used to be filled with local (non-Aramark) options.

They also used to be more liberal than most parks in letting you bring in outside food/drink, though I don't know what the rules are now. One of my friends would always stop at Tony Luke's for a cheesesteak on the way to the park; another (more thrifty) friend would stop at a nearby gas station and pick up a water or soda to take in.

My first trip ever to Citizens Bank Ballpark was last night.  LOTS of Astros fans.  I decided to keep it local: Tony Luke's philly chessesteak sandwich in CF.  Judging my the lines, it's the go to option.

The short rib sandwiches delivered to Todd and Geoff last night looked interesting.

And Kalas professed to being a fan of the Tony Luke cheesesteak. He, of course, is no stranger to Philly.

It seemed from the broadcast last night you could do no wrong at Tony Luke's.  I almost went to Papa Geno's for lunch today it looked so inspiring.

The Tony Luke's at Bunker Hill and I-10 is pretty good stuff.  Papa Geno's (at least the one near me on Ella/18th) is good, but it's not what I would consider representative of a real Philly Cheesesteak.

I'll have make the trip over there sometime.  The Papa Geno's near me is in the Bellaire Triangle. and usually satisfies the rare craving.  But I've never had a "real Philly" against which to compare it.

At the risk of sounding like a cheesesteak snob, Papa Geno's is closer to the quality you'd find at either Pat's or Geno's in Philadelphia.  It's not bad, but the locals don't really eat at those places for a reason.

I liked John's Roast Pork on Snyder the best when I was up there.

This is another reason why I like Camden yard so much, as discussed in the other ballfield thread.  You can bring in anything you want to eat or drink as long as it's not in a glass container. My usual go to is to pick up a bucket of Popeye's chicken and eat that with the family there.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

It sounded like Blum was stretching things in his attempt to be kind to Texadelphia the other night.

I have fond college memories of Texadelphia, but that doesn't mean it's good.

I too have very fond college memories of Texadelphia. I must've eaten at the Rice Village location about 5-6 times a week when at school. But for me, the point was the queso. The cheesesteak was secondary.

Sometimes when you’re very drunk and/or hungover, you need a grease bomb.  Pour mustard blend on it and it’s all the better.

Thanks y'all.  Had the cheesesteak "wiz with" and it wasn't bad.  My fiancé is a Jims on 5th fan so that's where our steaks usually come from.  She says pats and geno's are for tourists.
The game was pretty hard to watch.  Beltran isn't exactly fleet footed anymore but we all know that.  It just looked like they lacked hustle.
The guy 2 seats in front of me took a ball off the face and he has some cool stitch marks.  Ball went right over the net - the lower part - and I am definitely for extending the nets now.  I worry about the kids.  We were all paying attention and the ball caromed off a rail.
LOTS of Astros fans in the seats.   About 10 people I spoke to were headed up to Cooperstown.

Now back to my corner to lurk and hope for some trade news.

Youz Guyz is the best in the San Antonio area maybe in Texas. It's in Universal City near the Randolph Air Force Base.

A little piece of my plaque-laden heart died the day the Texadelphias in the Village and then Westheimer closed. Was it the best cheesesteak? Of course not. But there were self-inflicted drinking injuries that could only be salved with a couple beers and a cheesesteak covered in mustard blend.

Same here.  Jake's on Chimney Rock used to be good, haven't been there in years though and I hear they changed ownership (the originals were Philly natives).

Just about everywhere around me has a cheesesteak on the menu, exactly zero of them use the right kind of bread.

Last time I was there was a couple of years ago.  It was not good.  The bread sucked.  The steak was sliced too thick and was overcooked and overly chewy.

That's a shame.  They used to have Amoroso's rolls shipped in from Philly.

I've eaten at the Texadelphia on W 15th St and San Antonio St in Austin a number of times. It wasn't bad.
