I really should take the afternoon off.  If only, I had taken off a day already this week!

Here's hoping Beltran and McCann bring something to the table against Shoemaker. I seem to recall a lot of dominance from the cobbler last year.

So, my first time in the stadium in a while.  The grassy knoll thing actually looks more cartoonish in person than it did in the artist's renderings.

Also there's a gentleman wearing a Hartford Whalers jersey and a Dallas Cowboys hat sitting immediately in front of me.  He looks more cartoonish than the grassy knoll.

I actually liked the new hitter's background.  It's one of the few changes for the better, IMHO.

Hopefully they don't run out of pretzels by the third inning, like they did on Opening Day.  Or perhaps, they were saving those OD pretzels for later in the season...

Bottom 1

Springer flails wildly at a shin high splitter, K.
Beltran destroys a meatball to deep, deep right after flailing at a shin high splitter for strike 2. GONE! 1-0 Good Guys. Beltran all smiles in the dugout.
Altuve just gets under one, flies out to right a few steps short of the track. 2 outs.
Correa mashes a 1-0 pitch about 100000 feet to left, but a little out in front of it, foul. 3-1 Correa gets a meatball down the pipe and hits a towering fly to medium center. 3 outs.

Shoemaker is throwing lukewarm slop today. Spit on the splitter and tee off, boys.

CJ Old Woman down on the power curve. He couldn't have hit that one with a broom. Nasty, nasty, nasty.
Simmons quickly down 0-2, works the count to 3-2 on a couple of good takes.  Flails at a curve ball that the bottom dropped out of. 2 outs. Simmons was a foot over it with his swing.
Cameron Maybin sounds like a super rich prick at a prep school. Down 1-2, works the count to 3-2 after a few good takes. Misses just up and out, ball 4.
Maybin on first, Espinosa hitting lefty. 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1... Ugh, McCullers isn't finishing his pitches this inning. Strike 2 as Espinosa acted like he thought he'd drawn a walk. Foul. Swing anna miss on a good curve!

Bottom 2

McCann hits in to the shift, 4-3 from shallow right field. If McCann had been running any slower he would've been going backwards. 1 out.
Bregman smashes the ball to right center, Calhoun got to the ball but couldn't hang on as he stumbles while trying to make the catch in the alley. Close play at 2nd, Bregman in with a double and a... unique slide in the 2nd. He basically skidded on his ass over the bag, but held on.
Brian McCann again Gattis 4 pitch walk. Bregman on 2nd, Gattis on 1st, one out.
Marwin 0-2 pitch takes a crazy hop off Maldanado and goes to the screen, both runners move up. Marwin swings at a pitch a FOOT FUCKING OUTSIDE for the 2nd out.
Marisnik fouls off a cement mixer curve, right on it, but straight back. 1-1. 2-1. Roped down the left field line a foot or two foul, 2-2. Fouled off on a low splitty straight down. Hard one hopper right at 2nd, 4-3.

Marwin's shit at bat was a backbreaker.

End 2.

Maldonado 6-4, one out.
Top of the order with Escobar. Throws two change ups in a row with 2 strikes, Escobar Gomez's himself swinging at it and ends up on his ass, strike 3. 2 outs.
Calhoun can o' corn to Marisnik in center. 3 outs

Bottom 3

Springer leads us off and infuriatingly swings at a 3-0 pitch, grounds out 6-3. SO. FUCKING. STUPID. 1 out.
Beltran absolutely fucked by the 3rd base umpire on a check-swing call for strike 3. But to be fair, he blew one in Beltran's favor earlier in the at bat. 2 outs.
Altuve just under another one, flies out to Trout in right center.

End 3
1-0 Astros.

Took two meatball 90 mph fastballs for strikes then flails at a shin high splitty.

Okay, I'm back.

McCullers punches out Pujols.
Next guy pops to McCullers about half way between mound and plate.
Walks Simmons after having him down 1-2.
Hinch heading to the mound, with Devo tuning it up in the pen.

Bottom 7, 2 outs, runner on first.

McCullers stays in to pitch to Maybin.
Swings through a changeup.
Slurve off the plate away.
Misses low. 2-1, 98 pitches.
Apparently misses high, 3-1. Pitch tracker showed it top of the zone.
Misses "high" again. Walked him.
Runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.
Hinch on to make the change.

Gamezone shows the last two pitches to Maybin as being right down the middle.

Gamezone shows the last two pitches to Maybin as being right down the middle.

They were at the top of the zone. Both were borderline, but both could've been strikes.

Devo struck out Espinosa on a bunch of change ups the other night, then today blows him away on three straight heaters.  Espinosa is saying "Fuck...that's not fair!"

Bottom 7

Bregman (Shoemaker still in) takes a spinning slider on the knees inside, strike. Swings through a slopball. Does his best Springer impression swinging at a shoetop shitsplit. 1 out.
Caveman ball 1, low. SMOKED down the 3rd base line, Escobar makes a nice pick and throws out Gattis by less than a step (TAKE NOTES, MCCANN).
The Lost Soul, Marwin up. ball one just outside. takes a strike. Rolls over on 4 hopper to second, 4-3.

The Astros continue to make a shitburger sparkle in the sun.

Gamezone shows it at the dirt.  But not sure.  Clearly looked like a ball if you can lay off, but after 11 straight fastballs, whowouldathunkit?

It wasn't in the dirt, but it was low.

Gamezone shows it at the dirt.  But not sure.  Clearly looked like a ball if you can lay off, but after 11 straight fastballs, whowouldathunkit?

About the same height as the 150 splitters Springer swung over today. Shinners.

Also there's a gentleman wearing a Hartford Whalers jersey and a Dallas Cowboys hat sitting immediately in front of me.  He looks more cartoonish than the grassy knoll.

Cameron Maybin sounds like a super rich prick at a prep school.

Maybin is the only  major leaguer I've ever met outside of a stadium. He went to a posh public high school here in Asheville. I used to work in a deli in his neighborhood and one time I made him a sandwich. This was just prior to the draft. I asked him if he expected to be taken in the first five picks, and he said yeah.  He seemed nice enough, though someone I work with now (who went to high school with him and whose dad is the bullpen coach for the Rockies) said he was "full of himself." Which, well, aside from the literal oddness of the phrase I'm thinking about now, I mean maybe he'd earned that at 17, or whatever.

If memory serves, it was a hot roast beef.
