Astros with two on and one out in the first...

Gomez's recent trend of going to knee swinging and missing is driving me. Fucking. Crazy.

Perez is going to break his wrist trying to yank those high fastballs back down in to the zone.

I don't remember seeing him even make contact when he does it, he obviously doesn't see the pattern.

Here's a thought. Don't swing so hard it pulls your whole body away from the ball.

Nobody has never said "Wildly flail and fall over at the ball, hit the ball.".

B1:

Calhoun rolls over on one and  taps it to SS, but with the shift, no one is there...single
Trout strikes out looking...strike zone pretty wide so far
Calhoun moves to 2B on a wild pitch, Conger blocked it, but had no chance at Calhoun
Pujols grounds out 6-3...would have been an easy double play the pitch before
Cron strikes out swinging

Angels don't score, but Keuchel really had to work for it

No score after one

I was thinking the same thing.  Not sure what the deal was, but normally a guy advances on that play.  Cost them a run.

Or maybe just stop pitching off the outside corner to him if you're going to shift that way? Seems like a 2nd half of the whole "shift" thought process.

Wait. You're trying to say that 5 feet in front of the plate where you have to lunge to make the tag isn't where you want to be on a tag play at the plate?

B2:

Freese strikes out swinging
Aybar doubles down LF line
Victorino strikes out looking on a close pitch...again, the zone is pretty big
Perez walks on four pitches
Featherston taps one back to the mound, but Keuchel clanks it...E1, Aybar to 3B, Perez to 2B
Wild pitch, Aybar scores, Perez to 3B, Featherston to 2B
Calhoun singles to LF, Perez scores, Featherston scores...Astros challenging play at the plate on Featherston...call stands
Trout walks, Calhoun to 2B
Pujols strikes out swinging

But the Angels pick up three unearned runs...lead 3-0

Hard to say.  He jumped, but perhaps too high or didn't need to, as the ball hit the heel of his glove and caromed towards 3B.

It's amazing how many big league players still think they can spin and around and lunge at a player faster than the throw can get to them.

What happened?  I didn't see it.

Marwin attempted to steal second and jammed his left arm pretty hard in to whoever was applying the tag. He's laying on the ground wincing in pain looking miserable and Ashby is happily recapping the Astros offensive ineptitude.

B3:

Cron grounds out 5-3
Freeze flairs one to RF for a single
Aybar grounds into FC, Freeze out 3-6, but no double play chance
Victorino flairs a little pop right behind 1B, Aybar to 3B, and for some reason decides to try for home after Springer runs the ball in...out at the plate...score it 9-3-2

Still 3-0 Angels

Seems to me that the pitcher making the error should have the runs count against his "earned" runs since he made the error that led to them.

I get how the rule works, just seems weird to me.

I get how the rule works, just seems weird to me.

But if the offense didn't earn the run, it can't count in the average.  You have to think of "earned runs" as an offensive counting stat, and "ERA" as a pitching rate stat.

Altuve flies out F8
Correa walks
Gomez...fouls one off his head before homering to LF, Correa scores
Lowrie strikes out swinging
Rasmus strikes out looking at the ol' 80-mph belt-high fastball

But...the Astros pick up a pair...now trail 3-2

understand, sometimes it is there, sometimes it isn't.

but, at least now I feel like they have a chance to win it.

Well, and the they got Weaver's pitch count up over 100.  Perhaps they'll get better swings and maybe even a shot at the bullpen.

Springer hit by pitch
Altuve grounds into 6U-3 double play as he jogs down the line
Correa strikes out looking

Astros 8th ends in pathetic fashion.

Neshek in...

Trout walks
Pujols grounds into very strange looking 6-4-3 double play, as Pujols will get to 1B sometime later tonight
Cron hits a soft grounder to 1B, but with the shift, Marwin is playing 2B...single
Robertson in to pinch run for Cron, so that pretty much means he's taking 2B
Cowart, pinch hitting for Freese...grounds out 4-3

We head to the 9th...Astros chasing a run

This is probably not a good enough team to make the playoffs and they certainly aren't good enough to win a playoff series if they should find themselves in one. Who knows what might have happenend if Springer and Lowrie had stayed healthy. Their respective periods of inactivity derailed two promising individual seasons.

Finishing above .500 is going to be tough, let alone holding off the Rangers for the division.  They may squeak into the play-in game.

Right, because they're certainly going 5-16 the rest of the way.

They have 12 more on the road, and 9 at home against the A's, Angels and Rangers.  You see six wins in there?  Maybe.  I'm not saying there's not a chance, I'm saying they've got a tough road ahead.

I'm with you Jim. This team has flaws but what team doesn't? You don't lead a division all year if your not good enough to make the playoffs. They may not make it but they ARE good enough to make it. Once you get to the playoffs anything can happen.
