How is it possible that the Royals have played 6 fewer games than the Astros?  I have noticed several weeks where the Astros played both Monday and Thursday games, but to have an entire week's worth of additional games played seems extreme.  Intriguing, one might say.

A rainout or two along the way? Brownie and Blum were talking about that last night and agreed that the second half may be tough for them. They were either talking about or conjecturing about doubleheaders to be played. I miss the doubleheader myself. Used to be alot of them.

The owners hated the gate loss, and the MLBPA doesn't like playing two games in one day. However, I love the twin bill.

I went to a double header in Corpus a couple of weeks ago.  They shortened each game to 7 innings, which I've got to admit I thought was pretty reasonable in the minors.

I remember twin bills in Colt Stadium. I think some were day/night jobbers and they required a separate ticket for both.

Top of the First
Moustakas grounded out to shortstop.
Escobar grounded out to first.
Cain with a single
Morales hit a ground-rule double.
Perez grounds out to end the top of the first.

That double bouncing over the fence probably saved a run.

I don't know what's worse, that fact that Colby Rasmus doesn't know you raise cattle on a "ranch", or the fact that he thinks that's a guilty pleasure.

B4:

Correa flies out F8
Gattis triples up on Tal's Hill.  Cain slides head first into the wall, throws the ball back from his ass.
Carter walks, the pitch goes over the catcher's head, and Gattis scores on the wild pitch
Santana with a roller up the third base line...no play, infield single.  Carter to 2B
Conger pops out to 1B
Tucker strikes out swinging

3-0 Astros.

Marwin blisters a line drive to LF, but right at Gordon at the wall

Altuve doubles to LCF...Springer scores, Altuve moves to 3B as the throw gets by the catcher.  I assume it will be an error?

Everyone's talking, few of them know

Man I hope Marisnick gets back soon.  Santana is a train wreck in the outfield.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

T6:

Moustakas grounds out 6-3
Cain loops one into RF...Santana lopes around in a circle, stumbles awkwardly as the ball gets by him.  Springer runs it down as Cain limps into 2B
Morales grounds back to Keuchel, out 1-3 as Cain has to hold at 2B
Perez grounds out 6-3

Still 4-0

I think of Springer as an athlete playing baseball. He looks like he is still learning the game and his athleticism gets him by.

Eh...baseball is a game that sets you up for failure.  You don't "get by" at this level.  You get there by years and years of work, work, and more hard work.

his instincts don't seem as finely honed as some guys with less athleticism. Or, maybe he is just more reckless by nature. Keep in mind he is from the NE and probably has not played as much baseball as guys from the south and west.

He's still go things to learn, certainly.  I just don't think baseball is a game that allows for that "wing it like on the playground" kind of style that you can get away with in other sports.  It just requires so much repetition and discipline to reach the Major Leagues.

Well, he was Big East player of the year, and a first team All-American.  He wasn't *that* obscure.

Well, I'm glad he's on my team. I think he will get a good bit better if he stays healthy out there and I consider that a concern with him flying around like he does.

He generally gets good reads off the bat and gets a good jump on the ball. That said his athleticism let's him get to balls even when his read or jump isn't that great.

RECAP: Ho-hum, another shutout

Excellent, but this:

"For the first time since 2001, the Astros have opened the season with three consecutive winning months.  Savor it, folks."

Was the year I won the race for the lid.  Just saying.
