Most hits in a season by a RH Hitter
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:14:32 pm »
I was looking at how Altuve stacked up on the all time hits in a season and I was surprised by how lefty dominated the list was.  Here is how he stacks up against other RH hitters who have more than 220 hits in a season.  He is tied for 27th right now.  I bolded those who have hit more than 220 since WWII.  He is only the eighth RH hitter to hit over 220 hits since WWII.  Plumb impressive season from the little fellow.

RH Hitter Hits in a Season:
1. Al Simmons 253 (1925)
2. Rogers Hornsby 250 (1922)
3. Ed Delahanty 238 (1899)
4. Hugh Duffey 237 (1894)
    Harry Heilmann 237 (1921)
    Joe Medwick 237 (1937)
7. Rogers Hornsby 235 (1921)
8. Kirby Puckett 234 (1988)
9. Nap Lajoie 232 (1901)
10. Freddie Lindstrom 231 (1928)
      Freddie Lindstrom 231 (1930)
12. Tommy Davis 230 (1962)
      Joe Torrie 230 (1971)
14.  Rogers Hornsby 229 (1929)
15.  Kiki Cuyler 228 (1930)
16.  Billy Herman 227 (1935)
       Rogers Hornsby  227 (1924)
       Nap Lajoie 227 (1910)
19.  Harry Heilmann 225 (1926)
       Johnny Hodapp 225 (1930)
       Paul Molitor 225 (1996)
       Tip O’Neil 225 (1887)
23.  Joe Medwick 224 (1935)
24.  Hank Aaron 223 (1959)
       Joe Medwick 224 (1936)
       Kirby Puckett 224 (1986)
27.   Jose Altuve 221 (2014)
       Michael Young 221 (2005)

Link to full list BTW 1930 must have been a down year for pitching.  20  batters had more than 200 hits that season.

Joe Torre is the most impressive, to me.

I have heard or read 1930 was considered the ultimate offensive season(I'm not sure why).  I believe the whole NL hit over .300 that season.

Joe Torre is the most impressive, to me.

Hornsby is the most impressive to me.  4 entries in the top 16.  Wow.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

I wonder if the decline after WWII reflects changes in the game?  That there was more emphasis placed on hitting for power and less for average?  It would be interesting to see if the list of the top 25 or so slg. has a different time bias.

The top 25 slugging percentages of all-time are an interesting mix. 13 of the top 25 were between 1920 and 1932. 10 more were between 1994 and 2004.

The only two inbetween 1932 and 1994 were a couple of seasons from some guy named Williams.

Babe Ruth has 7 of the top 25 slugging seasons. Bonds has 4 more. Hornsby, Gehrig, Williams, McGwire each have two. The name that stands out: Larry Walker.

Hornsby on that list and the hits list is pretty incredible.

I guess Torre impressed me with his 1970 and 1971 seasons because up to then he'd been kind of a big, slow catcher, albeit with a good bat.

Then gets traded to STL and goes on one of the fad diets popular then (the water diet?), loses a lot of weight and gets in top shape and becomes a relatively svelte 3B; and then goes out and puts up by far the two best hitting seasons of his career. In a non-hitters park. His breakout year (1970) was a notable offensive spike season, but he got his 230 hits in 1971.

I like it that he basically remade himself physically, and refined the skills he had, to do something great.

Altuve's hitting 222 for 647 (.3431) right now, through 2 ABs tonight.  If he goes 0-for-14 to finish 2014, he'll finish at .3359.   Victor Martinez is at 183-for-548 (.3339) right now.  He'd have to go 7 for 16 (.438) over his last 4 games to pass the ice cold Altuve.

Altuve got robbed of a double earlier tonight on a nice running catch near the LF line by the Rangers' left fielder. Seems to be having a little bit of tough luck lately.

Altuve with 2 more SBs to give him 3 more SBs (56) than strike outs (53).  Outside of Juan Pierre, who did it 5 times, having more stolen bases than strike outs (min. 50 stolen bases) is pretty rare.

Yeah, he smoked the ball to LF at least twice last night without having anything to show for it.
