Appel was a hometown choice for Houston, and a safe pick, at that. But if that draft were to be done over, Bryant would likely be the No. 1 guy. The N.L. GM was serious when he speculated about the 50-homer potential.

Doubt it. Not saying that he wouldn't have been a legitimate choice, but neither he, nor Appel, have done anything to really differentiate themselves from what they were entering the draft. Both are pretty much what they were expected to be less than a year ago. If the Astros liked Appel more then, I don't see why they wouldn't still make that pick today.
